770 (Q-50/V-45).....Yoo hoo

Hi fellow gmatters

I've religiously read people's posts on this section of BTG and always wished that one day I'd also be able to post here. Finally that day has come, took the GMAT this morning and scored a 770 (Q-50/V-45). I'm specially pleased with my verbal score since I really struggled with verbal early on during my preparation (I hate SCs  )

Here is a quick debrief:

Books used:

Quant

Did the OGs and the Manhattan books. Being an engineer never really strggled with quant though DS was a bit of a bother early on. Was regularly hitting 51 on the practice tests so 50 on the actual test was actually a bit of a downer but guess i can't really complain with a 770 :D

Verbal

SC - The problem area for me initially. Went through a Princeton book early on but found it to be of no help. Then referred to Manhattan SC guide and found it very useful though it didn't have any practice questions. Did some 200 odd questions from 1000 SCs doc. Towards the end of my prep a fellow BTG member recommended Aristotle Sentence Correction Grail and found this book to be very very useful, specially during the later stages of my prep.

CR - Referred to the Powerscore Bible and did some LSAT papers. Was pretty confident in this area and didn't really have too many problems.

RC - I've always been a voracious reader so reading speed and comprehension were never really a big issue. Just needed some regular practice so I did all the passages in OGs 11 & 12 and some 30 odd high difficulty passages from RC99

The only suggestion I can give to fellow test takers is to hold on to your nerves on test day. The GMAT is a bg test of your nerves and initially you will feel stressed out. The key is not to let this get to you but to settle down quickly and get on with the test. I, for one, surely got the first 3 or 4 questions in Quant wrong but then I settled down and don't think I made any mistakes 10th question onwards.

Would like to thank the following fellow BTG members for their help:

Shovit Dhar - for suggesting red bull. It really helped

rishi raj - for recommending the Aristotle books. The SC Grail & RC99 rock.

uprightcitizen - for an awesome debrief; picked up a lot of points from this

Its now time to get started with the apps. Good luck to everyone. If there are any specific queries would be glad to address those.

Cheers

Great Man!!
I have some [stupid] queries...
Do u have any idea how many Quant and Verbal u might have got correct?
How many RCs 3 or 4? Total how many Q from RC?

Thanks,
Shovan

Obviously don't have the exact figure but I think 4-5 incorrect in Verbal will give you a 44-45 and and another 4-5 incorrect in Quant will give you a 50

got 4 RCs around 12-13 questions

Great!! very inspiring post. This is true that key to break verbal part is RC after SC. SC is definitely the starting point but a good RC makes a big difference. In RC, one passage have at least 3 or more questions so a good reading can get all those correct.

Hey bro,

good insight. ive a few strange questions, if you can assist with any, please let us know:

a) can you help me understand the distribution of medium/difficult questions in the exact test in reference to OG books. what i mean is: so since you got such a superb score, did you get mostly questions similar to the last 15% of each sections in the OG books?

b) once I've solved a problem, somehow the solution stays in my mind - for weeks. even if i made a mistake, i can at least recall glimpse of it when I redo the same question in OG. any tips on how you combat this?

c) when you solved the OG questions, how did you perform on the last 10-15 questions on each section? did your errors increase or you could manage them well too? the thing is, I'm starting to make 6-7 mistakes in last 15 questions of diff sections (in OG books), is this normal?

Great .. congratulations. for the massive score . Do you think that passages and questions in RC99 cover all GMAT topics , such as economics, social science , science etc.. SC grail seems to be easy but succinct.. Any idea whether the difficulty level of GMAT questions was in same level as latter OG questions..and were any idiom usage out of the blue (not seen before in your practice )

Yes my errors did increase but not by much

Yes I think RC 99 is a great resource as it has passages from across subject areas and it doesn't give u too many questions from each passage unlike most other practice material....the only thing lacking is short passages since most of the passages are quite long.....Do go through the last section of SC Grail since i found that most useful while revising my SC concepts

Difficulty level is similar to the last 30-40 questions in OG

Nope didn't find any idioms I didn't know
