740 GMAT (48Q, 42V) - Colombian 30yo

by colombian86 » Sun Aug 28, 2016 7:47 pm
Just beat the gmat and it does feel amazing.

Started last year studying for the test with the EmpowerGmat one month crash course, and got a 690 in my first try. Re-started in may2016 with two month EmpowerGmat course planning to present it in the last week of july. I felt I was in great shape, and felt pretty confident of my preparation (my trial tests were all around 710). Had the test and got a 640 and Canceled it (I later realized that I was not on the right mindset that day, it has A LOT to do with how you perform on the test). Although this was a very hard emotional hit for me (thought several times in giving up and keeping the 690), I knew I had been very disciplined with the two month program (2-3 daily hours during weekdays, 4-6 hours during weekends for 2 months) and decided to give it a third try three weeks later. I kept doing CATs, all around 710.
I had the test last monday (August 22nd) and could not believe I got a 740. I improved my Quant score in 1 point compared to my first try (47->48) but the real point getter was my Verbal going from 38 to 42 (I am a native Spanish speaker so this was a great deal for me).

I am not a natural disciplined guy, but I somehow got motivated with the EmpowerGmat methodology and I have to say I recommend it a 100%. It does need a lot of self-discipline, but the tools are right there and the tactics and video explanations are super clear. Also it is waaaay cheaper than most of the class based courses, and although I did not take any of those, I heard from many friends that they are just not worth it.

I wish the best of luck for all of you as well! Final advice: Keep going, and work hard. Do not give up! (many people with nice intentions will tell you to stop, but don't!) Try once, fail, and keep trying. You can totally crush the Gmat!! (Thank you Rich and Max)

Hi colombian86,

That's OUTSTANDING news! With a 740/Q48, you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you, so you shouldn't hold back when it comes to your applications! You clearly have strong critical thinking skills and you were properly able to deal with the hurdles that occurred during your studies, so I think that you have the capacity to do some big things in Business School and beyond.

1) What Schools are you planning to apply to?
2) When are you planning to apply?
