Hi,

I'm Rijo from Bangalore, India.

Brief Summary of profile:

Current Position : Partner at National Printing Press ( 30 year old Family business founded by my father in Bangalore with over 120 employees), Been here for 2 years. Was involved in a part time capacity since I was 14 years old(not sure if this counts) I did buy my way into the partnership if that helps my cause. Would have worked here for 3 years by the time I join the course.

Previous position: Trainee Decision Scientist at Mu Sigma Business Solutions (Full time). was here for about 22 months.

GMAT Score: 710 (Q - 49(77%), V - 38(85%), AWA - 5(59%), IR-6(69%))

Education: Bachelor of Engineering in Industrial Engineering from BMS College of Engineering. Graduated with a 8.46 CGPA( First class with distinction)

Extra Ciriculars and Community Service
Take part every year during the various cultural programs in our community
Love to code, learnt to write code my self and developed a working website for my friends' start up (unfortunately closed right now)
Volunteerd as a teacher at the school for children affected with HIV/AIDS during my summer vacations while I was in college

Target Schools:
Columbia Business School
Haas School of Business
Michigan (Ross)
Cornell
Darden

I heard a lot of emphasis is given to the quant score on the GMAT. Is my score good? I'm not sure if it is good enough to get into CBS or Haas. Will I need to rewrite GMAT again? I'm not sure my scores would significantly improve if I do (I was consistently hitting 720 on the practise tests).

Also how important is my AWA and IR section scores? I don't think I've done exceptionally well there.

Overall, what do you think of my chances of getting in based on my profile? Should I look for other lower ranked schools?

Thanks and Regards,
Rijo John

Hi Rijo: I have to say- the 710 is going to make top 10 schools difficult with your profile as written. I do think if this is your goal you should retake the GMAT. I would not worry as much on the other scores- just get the total up in the 740 range and you have much better odds. You would also have much better odds for getting some funding at top 20 programs with better stats so this could really be a money saving venture for you. Best wishes!

Hey Rijo!
So first of all, your profile is very interesting as is your family business. Since you have such a unique profile, a lot of the evaluation will depend upon how well you can "sell" the family business, and your future plans for it.

I think you should really focus down on that because your story is unique and has great potential.

That having been said as an Indian candidate not from a top firm, with a GMAT below 740 and not from an IIT, Top 10 schools will be tough. Not impossible, because you might be able to push yourself in based n your story, but still... very tough.

If you do believe you can get a higher GMAT I would strongly urge you to pursue that. Have a look at this really interesting article here about Indians and retaking the GMAT: https://admissionado.com/mba/to-retake-o ... n=mba_blog

But even with a 750 you haven't solved all the problems. So my suggestion is to also expand your school list, at least to Top 20 (if not 30) to make your school strategy more realistic.

I hope this helps!
Best,
Jon
