Alright every time I was restless, I went through a lot of "I Just Beat the GMAT" stories to seek motivation; some I thought were made up by people who were bored, some I thought were posts by specific GMAT prep companies to promote their products and some really really annoyed me coz they started with "oh I thought I will score much lesser, I was stressed, I did not do a particular section well , blah blah blah and oh my God I was shocked to see a 700!!"

I gave my Gmat plenty of times and I obviously never wrote on this blog before but this time I decided to coz if my story can motivate atleast one person who is really stressed and on the verge to give up, I will be really really happy! I gave my gmat on Oct 5th, it took me 15 days to celebrate and get over my hangover. I am too embarrassed to refer to my old scores so when I got 610 in 2013, I got 48Q/27V and my recent score 710 split is 49Q/38V.

So how did I do it after years of writing gmat over and over again? I was always good at Quant and managed to score 47-49, so obviously what screwed me over was my verbal. I went for classes bought lots and lots of material, after a while it did not seem too much to spend on the books coz I already spent $250 each time for my gmat numerous times. I did register for Daily GMAT practice questions and I followed for a few days but later stopped answering.

I gave my gmat for the first time in 2012 an I went for Manhattan classes and got their entire set. A friend of mine gave me princeton and kaplan books later. Manhattan tests for Quant are very difficult but the SC book and the verbal scores in the tests are very good and close to accurate. Princeton on the other hand, math is very easy and vice-versa. I bought Magoosh when I got a 590 in 2013 and they promised a money back guarantee if my score did not increase by 50 points and I got 610 and I did not ask them for a return but when I decided to give my gmat this year I wrote to them and they renewed my access, I don't know how it did not help me then but it sure did this year. Apart from all this, I took classes for verbal and my Sir gave me SC notes and taught me that I should write down points when I do CR and RC questions because Gmat definitely tests one's patience and in my tuition classes he had seen how restless I got after a few questions. So write down as you read, your mind cannot be fresh after 3hrs! For me it was easier to learn from videos than from books as my attention span is very short and I get bored easily, so buy Magoosh or e-gmat or any classes and then do the OG and then questions from whichever prep you bought. Also, look out for free lessons on youtube for verbal and quant, they are pretty good.

You need to be very very thorough with the OG, I did it like so many times that after a while I kind of remembered the answers by heart before I could finish reading the question. You need to be very good with your basics so be it quant or verbal start from the scratch, Magoosh is good, Manhattan SC is good or be it any course you buy, just start from basics and jot down the things that you do not know. I can help anybody who needs my notes, I can get it photocopied and mail or something.

You need to be calm during the exam, after a lot of reading I did take a redbull and a chocolate to the exam, although I wish they let me get out for 2 min and get a smoke; its not like I would copy or something if i got a breath of fresh air.

Hi AnayaS,

Can you send me the photocopy of your notes? I am struggling in verbal like yours and scored a dismal 600 in GMAT. Please help. Thanks.

Hi AnayaS,

Congratulation on your effort. Like you, I have made multiple attempts of GMAT already and the next time will be my fifth. My last score was a 610 Q44 V29 but I am not giving up the MBA dream. If you can send me a copy of your notes, that will be great. I could really benefit from them. Thank you very much!
