530 last time

by skins81 » Mon Aug 16, 2010 12:16 pm
I got 530 last time on my GMAT Q35 and V28. Main weakness is SC and CR. I have 8 weeks until I take it again. How should I prepare for the next test to get at least a 650? Both math and verbal are a weakness. I have the MGMAT books and OG 11. Do I need any more books? What should be my study plan?

At the risk of sounding biased, I would highly recommend a training course. Just so you know I am impartial (as a consultant I must be objective), there are several good companies out there who offer personalized, classroom instruction on how to better your GMAT score. I can say without hesitation that the Veritas prep instructors are top in their field, and have not only all personally scored in the 99th percentile, but have also undergone a rigorous selection process for their ability to teach others. Additionally, the Veritas guarantee will allow students to take the course again if they are not happy with their score. Good luck! you don't have far to go!

I dont know how much time you have remaining for you to apply for apps, but if you could get some more time like another 8 weeks then I think with a systematic approach you can reach it. I believe in two things, which I am practicing and going through - Basics first then Practice.

1. You have all the manhattan books that cover most of the math/verbal basics. Go through each chapter and learn the math basics then practice the OG 10/11/12 Questions sincerely. note down things that you want to remember in flash cards or notes and revise them one/two times a week.

2. For verbal you can take MGMAT SC book and go through it like 2-3 times and remember all the rules. I really love SC and I learnt all the tricks from MGMAT SC. For CR, I am not the right person to advice, find the right practice material from the forum posts (who score high or in a similar situation like yours) and try to see if it helps you. Also, daily do 2 RC passages it helps in long run.

For us, GMAT is all about Hardwork & Smart work, finding out what is lacking in us and fixing it. It takes time, consistent performance and ability to be calm during stressful times. Good luck w/t your prep and don't give up (If this is what you want in life to be)

getting from 530 to 650 isnt a big ask and you should be able to do so in 8 weeks. But the thing is that you should lay more importance on the basics.Forget all the difficult questions, they are not for you.Just concentrate on the basics. One more thing is make one section your strength.Lets say if Quant is better than verbal for you, concentrate a bit more on quant, make it a strength.Just practice verbal on and off.650 should be achieved.
Good Luck!!!

I would recommend that you take a course as well. Some people are great at studying on their own, and others are not so much.

If you have already gone through the MGMAT books and OG11 thoroughly, then it's time to ask for help. If not, you might be able to work harder to achieve your goal, but you better do something drastically different this time around.
Yep.

I have 8 more weeks until the test. Any suggestion how I can improve this to 650? What should be my study plan? Thanks!

Where are you at currently? Have you gone through the MGMAT books yet?

I have gone through MGMAT guides at least 3-4 times each (with notes), and OG guide thoroughly with discussions at least twice.

So I will say that you could probably do more. However keep these two thoughts in mind: learning theories without practice is moot and practicing without theories is also moot.
Yep.

I took my exam day before and got only 530(very low score). I prepared for two months and got Quants 44 and verbal 23. It was quite difficult to read all the questions in verbal and understand at first instance. So i found it difficult to complete the verbal part. Would be glad for all your suggestions. I was using OG12 for my preparation.
