(C) works for me here...

(A) incorrectly uses were published for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
(B) Tempting choice, but (C) makes the point much clearer.

I want to add another question along with saurabh_1922's question here.

What if option (A)
=> A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published,
was instead
=> A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published,

would (C) still be the correct choice?

Thanks.

Yes. in your second Question the choice (C) would be correct. In common usage both A and C are correct but C is more clear....

So are D & E wrong because they make Mark Twain the subject instead of the letter?

I also don't understand why B doesn't work. 'Publication of' doesn't make sense.

B is incorrect because it says
"A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year of publication "
here modifier is for letter by Mark which was published, but publication should be only for book not for the letter.

I was taught to run away from nominalization as much as possible.... in this case, you are stuck between B and C. B has the publication and C has published. Just choose the one that does not have nominalization. This is coming from my Prep Class teacher.....
