1000 CR test 10 Q 8

For the safety-conscious Swedish market, a United States manufacturer of desktop computers developed a special display screen that produces a much weaker electromagnetic field surrounding the user than do ordinary screens. Despite an advantage in this respect over its competitors, the manufacturer is introducing the screen into the United States market without advertising it as a safety improvement.
Which of the following, if true, provides a rationale for the manufacturer’s approach to advertising the screen in the United States?
(A) Many more desktop computers are sold each year in the United States market than are sold in the Swedish market.
(B) The manufacturer does not want its competitors to become aware of the means by which the company has achieved this advance in technology.
(C) Most business and scientific purchasers of desktop computers expect to replace such equipment eventually as better technology becomes available on the market.
(D) An emphasis on the comparative safety of the new screen would call into question the safety of the many screens the manufacturer has already sold in the United States.
(E) Concern has been expressed in the United States over the health effects of the large electromagnetic fields surrounding electric power lines.
OA:D

IMO C
Because, there are already many customers waiting to replace old ones with new tech desktops. So advertising is not necessary. since they cover MOST of the market.

Please pick you best options and give explanation....
any explanation refuting C would be great!! :- )

Though I haven't started on working on reasoning question but still I will try to explain at my best.

IMO (D)

First let's grasp the premise. Check the underline parts.

A company invented better technology for Swedish Markets but company is not advertising it as a factor of sale in US Markets.

Suppose you are the owner of the company. So, before looking at any of the choices, what is the first question and reasoning do comes in your mind?

In my case, it was following:-

Question: Why I would not like to disclose my newly invented technology to my buyers?

Answer: To clear first my pending stock or to sustain my company's reputation in that market.

So, now if I look at all the choices, (D) is only one which hits near to my answer. (to sustain my company's reputation in that market)

Remember, we are talking about advertisement in US Market, where safety standards may or may not be necessary as per the premises. Premise only indicates Swedish market is concern about Safety standard, so Swedish market may need the advertisement that shows the enhanced safety standard of the computer screen.

As we got our answer, so POE may not be necessary for this question. But still as you have asked, let us look why (C) is wrong over here.

Now question is why (C) is wrong over here?
Ans: There are many problems with option (C).

It states: "Most business and scientific purchasers of desktop computers expect to replace such equipment eventually as better technology becomes available on the market."

Check that underline and bold part in option (C).

1. It talks about limited types of buyers. i.e. Business and Scientific purchasers. It neglects the purchasers who are not scientific. And via premises, we don't know that who are the potential buyers? Business and Scientific purchasers or unscientific purchasers? May be business and scientific purchasers covers up only small percentage of market.

2. It uses modifier "Most" which means more than 50% but it never means "ALL" or "99%". So, in short, it may cover up only 51% of selected niche.

3. It states that selected buyers (Most businesses and Scientific buyer) replaces equipments once better technology available in the market. Now question is how do they come to know about the availability of better technology in the market? Since company is not making any advertisement, so do these selected range of purchasers regularly check the specification of latest equipment available in the market? They might do but who knows that? Even if they do, are they capable of understanding the aftereffects with the change in specification of equipment? They might know this but who knows that?

4. It states "Expect to replace". Ah! again one more unclear thought.

So, as we see there are many unclear thoughts with statement (C), so IMO, it is not a good choice.

In short, (C) has limited scope and reasoning is unclear. So we can drop choice (C).

I would go for D as well.
