Why is this option better?

by evs.teja » Thu Nov 26, 2015 11:37 am
The acrobatic show will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until audience interest lasts.

A. will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until audience interest lasts
B. begins at 6 p.m., continuing until audience interest lasts
C. will begin at 6 p.m. and, until audience interest lasts, will continue
D. begins at 6 p.m. and, as long as audience interest lasts, it continues
E. will begin at 6 p.m. and continue as long as audience interest lasts
E. Why is option A wrong?
Thanks

until means up to the time that.
to last means to continue to exist.

A: The show will continue until interest lasts.
Conveyed meaning:
The show will continue up to the time that interest continues to exist.
Implication:
Once interest CONTINUES TO EXIST, the show will END.
Not the intended meaning.

Hi Mitch,

First of all, I get didn't what you wanted to say here:

"to last means to continue to exist. "

Second, doesn't the original sentence:

"The acrobatic show will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until audience interest lasts. "

means that the show will continue till the time audience's interests lasts?

Third, is this right "audience interest".

It should be audience's interest. right?
Thanks & Regards

Thanks Mitch .....
Look at this sentence, often we see this promotion line on many banners or ads on TV
This offer is valid until stocks last
So here the conveyed meaning is The offer is valid up to the time stocks continue to exist
and the Implication: Once stocks continue to exist, the offer will end
I am sure that is definitely not the message the company intends to imply.
So is this statement wrong too ?

Thanks

Your analysis is correct, and This offer is valid until stocks last. is definitely wrong. Have you really seen that?

Generally what I have seen are things more like This offer is valid as long as supplies last.

yes sir ...I have seen this particular line many times.....Infact it is one of the reasons I got confused and posted this question in the first place.

Once again thank you very much Mr Hunt and Mr Marty Murray...Kudos to both of you.

to last is the OPPOSITE of to end.
The rain lasted two days.
Conveyed meaning:
The rain DID NOT END FOR two days.
Second, doesn't the original sentence:

"The acrobatic show will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until audience interest lasts. "

means that the show will continue till the time audience's interests lasts?
A: The show will continue until audience interest lasts.
Conveyed meaning:
The show will continue until audience interest DOES NOT END.
This meaning is nonsensical.
The intended meaning is that the show will continue until audience interest ENDS.
Third, is this right "audience interest".

It should be audience's interest. right?
One noun can serve to modify another noun:
football player
computer screen
film script

In each of the phrases above, the noun in red serves as an ADJECTIVE modifying the following noun.

OA: as long as audience interest lasts
Here, audience serves as an adjective modifying interest.
What KIND of interest?
AUDIENCE interest.
This construction is correct.
