When am I ready for the test? Post Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:27 pm
Dear Members,
As I continue my GMAT quest and track my progress, I'm observing something that I want to share to you all and get your feedback.

I'm preparing for a couple of months now, took instructor-led course to get the fundamentals right, and more importantly for the momentum.

I can honestly say that I'm cognizant of the strategies & steps to take on each of the SC, CR and RC question types. Even as I feel well-versed with the strategy part, I don't get all my practice questions correct. One would say, what makes you then think you know how to attack a problem? Well, for one - I can generally narrow down to 2 plausible choices (like many of us) and the correct answer choice is usually one of them. And two, when I see the explanation, I feel fairly convinced. It does not dawn on me then that ahh! that's why.

What is it that I need to put in to my prep to further hone my work? Do I need to practice more and more and more? Or I just don't have the aptitude that a good GMAT score requires?

I won't feel confident on the test day till I'm able to bag close 100% accuracy during practice.

This is a dilemma I'm facing and hope to benefit from your personal experiences and expert advice.

Thanks!

Regards, Kunal

I usually advise people that they are ready to take the GMAT when their GMATPrep scores are a few points higher than their target score. For example, it you know you want to get a 700, make sure you're consistently scoring 720+ on practice tests.

Since you're getting it down to the "final two" choices, I agree that your overall knowledge and grasp of strategy is probably strong! You just need to hone the way in which you analyze answer choices.

Here's my suggestion for SC: http://grockit.com/blog/gmat/2011/11/07/3-ways-to-look-at-a-sentence-correction-question/

and for RC: http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2011/12/07/how-to-pick-between-the-final-two-rc-answer-choices

Good luck!
