Help to understand what they ask? Is it total capacity of current volume of gasoline?

If 6 gallons of gasoline are added to a tank that is already filled to 3/4 of its capacity, the tank is then filled to 9/10 of its capacity. How many gallons does the tank hold?
(A) 20
(B) 24
(C) 36
(D) 40
(E) 60

Increase in water level: .9x - .75x = 6 so x = 40.
IMO D.

3/4x +6=9/10x --> 15x +120=18x -->120=3x ---> x=40 Smile

I read "How many gallons does the tank hold?" as how many gallong are right now in tank. so it is 9\10 * 40 (total capacity) = 36... where am I wrong?

Hey dber, I think, the Qs is asking for the total capacity of the tank but not the amount of water it is having now.
