Which of the following , if true, would be most damaging to X's position?

What does the above question mean
-> which of them would worsen X's position further
or
->which of them would nullify X's position (would in fact better X's position and thereby damage his stand on the position)

This question is asking, 'which of the following would be evidence that would hurt/discredit/damage the argument made by X'

So I guess your first interpretation is correct.
