by ansumania » Sun May 09, 2010 4:27 am
Q- Last week local shrimpers held a news conference to take some credit for the resurgence of the rare Kemp's ridley turtle, saying that their compliance with laws requiring that turtle-excluder devices be on shrimp nets protect adult sea turtles.

A-requiring that turtle-excluder devices be on shrimp nets protect

B- requiring turtle-excluder devices on shrimp nets is protecting

C- that require turtle-excluder devices on shrimp nets protect

D- to require turtle-excluder devices on shrimp nets are protecting

E- to require turtle-excluder devices on shrimp nets is protecting

frnds , want to see your comments on this....Why can't "C" be correct?

protect at the end of both A and C doesn't agree with the singular noun compliance.

The sentence wants to say that it is the compliance which protects turtles.

well...in that case wouldn't there be an option having "protects" at the end?

basically I want to understand why protecting is preffered over protect /protects

why is it 'compliance with laws....protecting' ?

pl. help bud......

the question is testing verb tense not form.
so as soon as you see that, you can eliminate A,C, D.
E. laws to require doesn't make sense, so
you get B. in less than 30 seconds..

the reason it can't be compliance with laws..protecting is because then the sentence won't be complete with no verb.
