Stymieing the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing of eight war ships as "fireships," vessels filled with pitch, brimstone, gunpowder, and tar and sent downwind toward the closely-anchored Spanish fleet.

The idiom 'not only x but also y' demands a parallel structure. So x and y must be parallel.

On this basis alone we can eliminate option A, B, and C

The use of "not only... but also..." in the two under mentioned examples is not correct

not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing of

'not only' should be placed after 'due to' because we have to show two reasons.

The correct construction here should be 'due not only to x but also to y '

not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also due to the sacrificing

Same as above + unnecessary repetition of 'due to'

While option D and E correct these errors, problem with D is that the modifier phrase before the comma modifies 'the reason', when it should modify 'the defeat'. This issue is also present in choice A.
