Statement 1

This tells us that 50 students are taking economics. But are all 50 of them male students? Are there 40 female students and 10 male students? Are there 25 of each? We don't know. Insufficient.

Statement 2

This tells us that 30 female students are taking economics. But this doesn't tell us anything about how many male students are taking economics. It could be all of them, none of them, half of them, etc. Insufficient.

Both

If 50 students are taking economics, and 10 of them are female students, 40 male students must be taking economics. Sufficient.
