Question
The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen foods:
"Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits."

Essay

The Olympic Food company is stating that they are now a 25-year-old company and because of this they are now going to have a faster processing of their food and increasing their overall profit. In the argument, it says that because the photo industry has decreased their cost of printing over 14 years the Olympic food company can do so also. This argument is flawed because they do not consider the actual process and technological advances in the time duration.
First the evidence states that the photo printing process has gone from costing 50 cents a print for a 5-day service to 20 cents a print for a 1day service. This is great proof that over time the processes of producing a product can and generally will decrease but the argument is stating that the advances are happening because of the age of the company not that the technology has been developed to speed up the process.
Second the conclusion is to strong saying that now our company is now 25 years old and so therefore we will be able to decrease of cost of processing and increase our profits. This is an assumption that does not consider if the process of frozen food has improved at all. As well as if it has improved over those 25 years they have been in business has the company been actively improving and installing this new technology in their facilities.
This argument could be strengthened if they discussed how over time the technology and processing of any product will be improved so that they company can increase its' profits. As well as discussing the technology have these new process' been implemented in their facilities? Then they can conclude that do to advances and improvements made in the field and their facilities over the 25 years they have been in business they will continue to decrease cost and increase profit. As the argument stated now it is flawed and does not have the evidence to back it up.
