CR - Infer conclusion

by karthikpandian19 » Thu Jun 28, 2012 6:20 pm
Automobile manufacturer X recently introduced an industry-leading 60-day trial period on 100% of the vehicles it sold to consumers through its network of automobile dealerships. Customers may use a vehicle for up to 60 days without committing to purchasing the vehicle. This trial period has been enormously effective-the number of vehicles sold in the quarter after the introduction of the trial period was 35% higher than the number of vehicles sold in the quarter prior, and surveys suggest that the public now possesses a more favorable opinion of the company with regard to the quality and reliability of its vehicles.

Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the information above?

(A) Vehicle sales would have increased by over 35% if automobile manufacturer X had introduced a 90-day trial period.

(B) Automobile manufacturer X did not make other changes that would negatively affect the public's opinion of the company's vehicles' quality and reliability.

(C) The cost of providing the trial period at a particular dealership is directly proportional to the number of vehicles sold by that dealership.

(D) Most consumers are more likely to purchase a vehicle if they are allowed to use the vehicle for up to 60 days before purchasing it.

(E) Fewer consumers consider the use of a vehicle for 60 days a satisfactory replacement for owning that vehicle than are motivated by the industry-leading trial period to purchase a vehicle from automobile manufacturer X.

(A) Vehicle sales would have increased by over 35% if automobile manufacturer X had introduced a 90-day trial period. --- Too big an inference and so incorrect.

(B) Automobile manufacturer X did not make other changes that would negatively affect the public's opinion of the company's vehicles' quality and reliability. Out of scope.

(C) The cost of providing the trial period at a particular dealership is directly proportional to the number of vehicles sold by that dealership. Out of scope.

(D) Most consumers are more likely to purchase a vehicle if they are allowed to use the vehicle for up to 60 days before purchasing it. This option says most consumers but we do not know what most consumers prefer so this is incorrect.

(E) Fewer consumers consider the use of a vehicle for 60 days a satisfactory replacement for owning that vehicle than are motivated by the industry-leading trial period to purchase a vehicle from automobile manufacturer X.--- This is correct because more consumers like to own the vehicle independent of the trail period than are motivated by the trail period.
