Rounding Numbers

7.5XY9

What digit does X represent if each of X and Y are single digits in the above decimal?

If the decimal is rounded to the nearest hundredth, the result is 7.55
If the decimal is rounded to the nearest tenth, the result is 7.5
(A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
(B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
(C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
(E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

OA is C

7.5XY9

What is X (hundredth digit)?

1. 7.55 when rounded.

X could be 4 or 5. Try some examples.

when 7.547 rounded to hundredth digit, it is 7.55
when 7.553 rounded to hundredth digit, it is 7.55

Insufficient.

2. 7.5 when rounded.

Clearly insufficient. X could range from 0 to 4. Greater than or equal to 5 is not possible because when that number is rounded to tenth place, the result will be 7.6

Combined,
From statement I, X could be 4 or 5
From statement II, X could be <= 4

When combined, X is 4 and not 5. Sufficient
