Two weeks from GMAT

by Dayln » Sun Sep 28, 2014 4:40 pm
Hey everyone,

I am two weeks from taking my GMAT (10/11/14) and wanted some advice on what the best plan of action should be.

I am almost completely through quant theory in the Economist (sequences right now, have not started on combinatorics, probability, permutations, etc.)

My CAT attempts were as followed:

Economist CAT #1: 490 Q31 V28 (8/3/14)
Economist CAT #2: 480 Q31 V27 (8/16/14)
Economist CAT #3: 470 Q29 V28 (8/30/14)

GMAT Prep #1: 620 Q46 V29 (9/13/14)
GMAT Prep #2: 590 Q39 V32 (9/20/14)
GMAT Prep #3: 640 Q47 V31 (9/27/14)

GMAT Prep were under conditions as similar to the test as possible (complete test, 8 minute breaks). That third attempt really drained me and caused me to miss seven of the last ten questions in the quantitative section so I feel like I was really performing well until then.

My goal was to get around a 580 and I feel confident in getting that and I am even considering applying to higher ranked schools. Any suggestions so far? Should I study more intensely or ease up so I don't crash come test time? I am planning to take one more practice test next Saturday a week before the real deal.

Thanks in advance, this site has been awesome.

Hi Dayln,

Based on your original goal, your plan seems to be working well. I'd suggest that you stick to what you've been doing for these last two weeks. As you review this latest CAT, you should take a good look for questions that you got wrong due to silly mistakes and questions that took way too long to answer. Those should be easy-enough issues to fix and doing so should help you to raise your score.

Hi Dayln,

It looks like you found a strategy that works for you, as you've been showing consistent improvement.

I see that you are taking one last practice exam a week before the test. Spend some time afterwards reviewing and analyzing your mistakes, as well as your timing strategy. I wouldn't do any more studying the afternoon before the test. By then, you know what you know.

Also, work on creating an enviornment that will help you relax and stay focused on the days leading up to the test. You'll be surprised how outside factors affect your concentration and energy on exam day.

Good luck!
