The newly launched health care

by Uva@90 » Tue Apr 14, 2015 4:54 am
Hi All,

Could you please help me with this question,

The newly launched healthcare scheme extends the assurance in the provisions to reduce the risk what many analysts had predicted previously, and rather to limit the losses insurers incur from higher than expected medical claims.

A) in the provisions to reduce the risk what many analysts had predicted previously, and rather to limit
B) in the provisions to reduce the risk what many analysts predicted previously, rather to limit
C) in the provisions' ability to reduce the risk what many analysts were predicting previously, and rather to limit
D) that the provision will reduce the risk that many analyst had predicted previously and limit.
E) that the provisions will reduce the risk that was predicted previously by many and limiting.

OA D

Thanks & regards,
Uva

D is the correct answer to this question

a)the second part disturbs the meaning of the sentence
b)it should be had predicted previously
c)provision's ability is not correct .It seems it has its own ability.
e)passive

Hi Saurav,

I agree that options C and E are wrong as you said.

I ended with A, B and D. Among these I eliminated A and D since it is 'Had predecited', which I feel unndecessary. The reason is the sentece already has word 'Previously', So usage of simple past is prefered over past perfect.

What you say ?

Regards,
Uva.

I believe that a sentence must use past perfect if there is an event before an event .Here previously helps us to understand that there is an event before an event and hence the tense.

Yeah, we need to use Past perfect if two event happened in past with one behind another.
If it is explicitly stated/mentioned that sequence no need of using past perfect instead we can go with simple past.

That's why I am saying use of past perfect is unnecessary.

The SC above is virtually the same as SC50 in the OG13.
Rather than worry about the SC above, I suggest that you study SC50, which I explain here:

When you compare the two SCs, note the following:
Just as the OA here employs previously to modify had predicted (past perfect), so does the OA to SC50 employ earlier in the year to modify had feared (past perfect).
