Taking supplementary courses for letter grade or pass/fail Post Tue Apr 03, 2012 1:11 pm
Pretty straightforward question:

I am taking several math courses before applying, to both strengthen my application and brush up on math concepts. Will be taking Statistics, Calculus, and probably Accounting.

Does it matter if I take these courses pass/fail? Or should I take them for a letter grade? I assume it doesn't matter much, but I can't find any opinion on the subject.

Thoughts?

It doesn't matter much (as long as you pass), it's more the extra effort to gain the math knowledge you don't have and give yourself a basis for higher level math that is important.

I did this and I would say that if you have the option of taking it for a letter grade then do so but make sure that you get that A. When i went through the application process I had adcom members tell me that the A was more beneficial than pass/fail. Think about it in terms of them comparing you to others with similar backgrounds or situations. That's how I looked at the app process. How can I position myself BEST when being compared to other applicants? An A in those classes would appear "better" than pass/fail. With that being said, it does say something about an applicant who decides to take supplemental classes.
