specific job question

by striker007 » Thu Jul 19, 2012 1:11 am
I have a specific question related to the career path that would help my MBA application better .

I'm from an Engineering background and I'm a fresher who's going to start working at this Investment banking firm . I've been assigned an IT role at this firm , I have to choose between these two choices , which would be better ?

1.Test Engineer - My job would involve

(a)getting the requirements from the end user
(b)ensuring that the coding team implements the requirements in a way that the user expects
(c)Testing the final product and ensuring that the final product delivered to the end user conforms to all his requirements.

2.SOftware Engineer - here my job would involve

(a)Writing and designing the code for a specific feature that the end user wants

(b) Fixing the bugs that a test engineer would raise

Which of these options would be better ? Again I'm not asking what's the "ideal job "to be in at the pre-mba stage . Also I'm not asking for a profile evaluation . Instead I'm asking which of the above alternatives is viewed better from an Ad-com perspective ?

Thanks
Paul

Paul,
From the AdCom's point of view, since both jobs are technical ones, neither is necessarily better than the other. The better job would be the one that would offer you more opportunities for advancement and leadership, either now or in the future. Does any of these jobs apply?

Thanks for your reply !

Well the first job is somewhat similar to what a Quality Assurance Analyst would do. Also in the first job I would be "kind of " leading the coding team , in the sense that I will tell them what needs to be done and I'll be responsible for whatever output they deliver . Also I'll be directly accountable for any issues that the end user may face .

The second job is purely technical . There's no "finance" or functional knowledge required whatsover . I'll just be developing a code for specific modules of the software .

Generally how is a Quality Assurance Analyst when compared to a software engineer who codes ?

Okay, I see the difference, but I think that they are relatively similar at the beginning. And the question is more: What would allow you for more opportunities say in the mid-term? It seems like the first job might put you in contact with more people and thus allow you for greater opportunities, but maybe not. You likely know the firm's structure far better than I, so really I think the key is: where can you get noticed? where can you do well? where can you be promoted?

and it may not even be a question of actual FUNCTION but of your own personal talents.... so if you are an AWESOME programmer but a so-so QAA, then even if at the begging it has less fancy responsibilities, it's likely better for you to take the post where you would personally flourish.
