Hi Jon,

I would really appreciate if you could evaluate my profile and guide me further on my way to secure admission to my only 2 target B schools : AGSM and MBS.

I gave GMAT today only and had 660 ( Q 48, V 32, Reasoning 7)

My profile
==========
Age : 32

I have around 9 years of work experience.
I am currently residing in Sydney and was made redundant this month only from my job because of cost cutting.

I am a Permanent Resident of Australia and moved here around 2 years back from India.

I have worked for around 1.5 years here in a government Telecom organisation.
I was working with the Quality team in the capacity of Change Analyst (field of Change Management) and Non Conformance Analyst. As a Change Analyst, I was working with business to do impact assessment and prepare implementation plan for proposed changes related to the processes, systems and documents. As Non Conformance Analyst, I was working with business stakeholders to resolve and close the non conformances raised in the system by business for issues cropping up in organisation.

Before this I was working in India as an average IT person with some involvement with Quality Control team in Project and lab audits and closing non conformances raised during these audits.
In my IT Industry, for 4.5 years, i was working as a team member working in telecom, cloud computing and virtualisation domain. I also got 2 awards for excellent performance in Automation Testing.

For next 2.5 years, I worked as a Project Lead and handled my team and project well keeping the Client satisfaction rate above 90% for the support project I was handling. I also worked on the pilot project from scratch, building the team and successfully converting the pilot into full time project for my organisation (TCS). I was promoted because of my performance within 1.5 years of joining organisation, though it was in designation and my role remained same.

Academics
==========
I am very sad to state that I do not have a very good academics.
10th : 65 % (CBSE)
12th : 61 % (State board)
Engineering Computers : 67.23 % (Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, India): At the end of GMAT exam, the system told it is equal to 1.9 GPA :-(

Extra Curricular activities
===========================

1. Have been involved in modelling assignments along with my engineering.
Worked in one pop album and one clothing line as a model.

2. Was head of the GK quiz team in the annual technical festival of university.

3. Associated with Bal Kendra, an organisation which takes care of the orphan childrens.
Have been donating and helping them in raising funds whenever possible as per my capacity.

4. Head of an entertainment committee in my 2nd organisation. Started this group after discussing with the director of the company to organise fun events, competitions and functions in company to increase productivity and motivation in employees.

5. Member of Special Task Force, which was started to find the root cause leading to the attrition rate, dissatisfaction and other employee related problems in the company. In groups we met different set of employees and collected data and reasoning to improve some factors in company to bring a cultural change.

6. A failed enterpreneur. Started a product company but had to shut down very soon because of some unavoidable reasons.

Reason for MBA
==============
I want to take more business oriented roles working more at the front end involved with customers like consultant or want to get involved in the capacity of a product manager taking care of a full product planning strategies, marketing for the product. All this, I want to do in a domain different from I.T obviously taking my learnings and experience from I.T, Change Management and Quality roles.

I would be really thankful if you could evaluate my above profile and let me know if I do need to retake GMAT to increase my score from 660 for AGSM (Australian Graduate School of Management) and MBS (Melbourne Business School), specially because of my super weak academics.

Thanks and Regards

Hello Nishant!
I will do my best.

First of all, things are hopeful. A 660 is a quite solid score for both of these schools, so there's no reason for you to retake the GMAT. (A first celebration)

I think your far bigger obstacle is that you are unemployed. I think that you should apply anyhow and take your shot, at as many Australian MBA programs as you can apply to before deadlines. Because it quite simply makes sense. But you WILL need to show that you are doing something useful in the meanwhile - volunteer work, entrepreneurship, etc. etc.

Actually anything you do is good.

The second most important thing will be to break this mode of "just an IT guy". You are, in a certain sense, who you present yourself to be. And you CAN change the way others perceive, and it is very much in your interest to be perceived as something other than a pure techie - but rather a leader and businessman who juuuuuust happens to work in Tech.

That would be much better :)

And the next thing is to keep a BRIGHT OUTLOOK. Things may be tough, for sure, but to show drive and passion and positivism will be very important for you to succeed in your endeavor

Best,
JF

Hi Jon,

Thanks a lot for your time and evaluation.
Just a last thing where I am worried is my low GPA. Do u think that won't be a big factor with my score and no. of years of experience.

Thanks again!

Well, to be fair a 67% in the Indian system, although not great, is nowhere near a 1.something.. :)

I think you shouldn't worry about it - it is what it is... Just find other ways to let them know that you are one heck of a smart guy!

Good luck!
