hi guys

i am a working professional and i have been toying with the idea of taking a gmat test for quite sometime. y'day i took a gmat diagnostic test at a coaching institute and scored 410. my test result definitely boosted my confidence considering the fact i have never prepared for it and i was out of the academic world since i left college in 2003. can someone please suggest me what all books i should buy and how long i should prepare to get a score above 700. i can find time in the evenings and dedicate my weekends for the preparation. your response will be highly appreciated.

thanks
mahesh

Welcome, mahesh!

700 is a tough score to hit, but if you prepare well, you can definitely do well on the GMAT. You will need to get a good understanding of the test itself and will need to work on the fundamentals (math formulas, grammar rules) as well.

I would highly recommend the following materials, and I'm sure others will give their input as well:

~ Official Guide, 11th edition
~ GMATPrep official practice tests, free from www.mba.com
~ Princeton Review, Cracking the GMAT.

There are also OG books for math and verbal prep, and Princeton Review has those as well. I have the PR books for each but haven't seen the OG ones.

The more practice you can get, the better. An hour or two on weeknights and more on weekends will be good.

Hope this helps!

MGMAT Sentence correction
Kaplan 800
OG11 <-- MUST BUY

Re: timing, most people prepare for about 3 months. And as another poster noted, it is very difficult to get a 700 - that's the 93rd percentile, so by definition only 7% of the people taking the test will score that high or higher. Just be aware of that - though that doesn't mean you shouldn't aim for it, of course!
