Topic: Second MBA +Age
PostThu Jun 29, 2006 9:27 pm

Hi ,

The background:
MBA,Engg Degree in Electronics,Post MBA Exp of 6 years.Working with Fortune 500 Company in Sales.(1 1/2 years of exp with Automatic Data Capturing Company -India+ 4 1/2 years in Retail Sales

I am planning a second MBA to further my career in Marketing/Consulting.

I am considering the following B Schools :
LBS,ISB,Oxford (Not Sure).

Now I will be turning 33 yrs next year so is it a 'quality decision ' to also consider top notch US B School also.
The point that is troubling me is that I will be 35 yrs when I pass out -how good will be the job prospects.(I know this is a subjective question ,I need some pointers to finally decide on this issue).
The financial burden a Top Notch B-School (I am interested in top B Schools only) is big, hence I am not sure to commit forward.

I plan to apply for R2.(is it ok?)

Can u recommend a few B Schools taking into factor (1) My interests (2) Employabity (considering my age factor) (3) ROI.?
And can u give ur opinion on my Profile for admissions to these B Schools?
Thanks

I suggest you look into Kellogg, Michigan, Tuck and Wharton. All schools will consider older applicants. You will just need to prove that this really makes sense for you at this point in your career. You also need to confirm that any school you are applying to will accept applicants who already have the MBA degree. If they do, you will need to tell a compelling story to prove that you need this additional MBA. The questions remains - why do you need yet another MBA degree?

Round 2 is fine.

Taking classes will not be considered community service.

Your prior MBA degree will be a problem for on campus recruiting. You should be able to expalin why you needed the two degrees. However, assuming you have a solid story, the emphasis will be on your work experience and skills and you should be fine.

As getting job post MBA can be tricky as you pointed out..Here is a bit for info......:
.
I would look post MBA for companies in say :RFID/ADC/Energy/Consulting/FMCGs/CP
The reason why I need another MBA: The first one I did was just after my Engg Degree .It wasn't a bad decision at all.I am able to perform effectively to a greater degree.T
My passion is to move into Software/ADC/RFiD or energy cos in Marketing( including BD)/Consultancy for which I think a Global MBA will be 'real plus' as i can get the knowledge, skill and attitude set to do effectively(Pardon me if it smacks of MBA lingo...but I am serious.)

What do you feel with this background....
(1) Do I have skill set good enough to land up with a Good Job post MBA ( even though it might look odd
suithink MBA,MBA,Btech!)
(2) Do you think I am too biased in my thinking ...The adcomm and future recruitment might still find too ...'a suspect case'...Do you feel that I am trying to squeeze in a reason to do another MBA?(Which honestly I think I am not doing)

Well I am sure you will give a solid 'straight from the gut and reason' answer..
Thank You

Hello and apologies! Scratch my answer above! I meant to write, "your prior degree will NOT be a problem." WILL be a problem was a typo.

I believe that if you are admitted to a strong program, the degree combined with your skill set will enable you to obtain a great job.
