The opening modifier describes ADAM SMITH himself not his two books so eliminiate A, B and C

Between D and E, I am not sure why we should choose WHAT over SIMILIAR TO...

Let's see what other have to say Confused

    modifier problem...

    thus A,B,C are out...

    secondly,IMO...

"similar to" is used when there is a comparison

    and

"what" is preffered when there is a direct analogy.

Wrong. Adam Smith's -- the possessive noun cannot be modified the opening clause 'A leading figure.....'. It should be Adam Smith.

    B. Adam Smith's two major books are to democratic capitalism like

    Same error as above

    C. Adam Smith's two major books are to democratic capitalism just as

    same error as above

    D. Adam Smith wrote two major books that are to democratic capitalism similar to

'that are to' and 'similar to': ackward construction.

    E. Adam Smith wrote two major books that are to democratic capitalism what

    Correct!!!
