For C, I would ask ask the question when they did what? It is a bit ambiguous.

Considering the parallelism bit here, the 2nd part of the sentence after and would be to determine what they did.

But did what?

Why not C in terms of meaning issue between for and to ?

Kisna, {C} has other issue:

C. to determine how mammals colonized the islands of the West Indies and when they did "WHAT"

The option {C} doesn't really clearly states what Mammals did?
