Puritan fanatics brought to civil and military affairs a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose that some writers have though inconsistent with their religious zeal, but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it.
(A) but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it
(B) but which were in fact a natural outgrowth of it
(C) but which were in fact natural outgrowths of it
(D) but it was in fact a natural outgrowth of them
(E) which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it

There should not be any problem in this one I guess.
"coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose"
the use of AND makes it plural....and Zeal is correctly ref by IT. Thus, the use of word "outgrowths" ref correctly to
"coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose"

Right Pahwa, this one is simple number agreement. Once you realize its plural, you can eliminate every choice except for B and C, and then outgrowth(s) decides the answer, because C is the only choice where there is full agreement. _________________ Verbal Tutor |
