A. there are less than one-quarter that many
B. there are fewer than one-quarter as many
C. there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount
D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount
E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount

Ans is C

Dan,

The other post explains answer as B.Even i feel that B is appropriate as you explained previously.However the OA is C

Hemanth, thanks for the tip. I looked at it again. B must be the answer because although B and C are both grammatically correct and acceptable, B refers more specifically to the number 4,000 in the sentence than C does because it says 'that amount' as opposed to 'as many'.

This is another case of making a best choice decision, one where you need to be armed with knowing GMAT English, as opposed to what we might normally speak or write. Frustrating! AARGH! Rolling Eyes
