Can someone explain to me the best/easiest way to solve this problem? The Answer is E.

If Bob produces 36 or fewer items in a week, he is paid x dollars per item. If Bob produces more than 36 items in a week, he is paid x dollars per item for the first 36 items and 1.5 times that amount for each additional item. How many items did Bob produce last week?

(1) Last week Bob was paid a total of $480 for the items that he produced that week.

(2) This week Bob produced 2 items more than last week and was paid a total of $510 for the items that he produced this week.
Posted: Fri May 09, 2008 3:08 pm (GMT -7)

Ok this one is simple if you look at it this way

Lets see what 13! is: 13x12x11 ....x2x1

So it can be written as 13! = 2xQ where Q is an integer
Similarly, it can be written as 3xW where W is an integer

Above listed equations are true because numbers from 2,3,4 to 13 are all factors of 13! so we can write it in the form nR where n is the known factor and R is an integer

K = integer
13! + 2 <= k <= 13! + 13

so if K = 13!+2 = 2xQ+2 = 2(Q+1) not a prime
similarly, if K = 13!+3 = 3W+3 = 3(W+1) not a prime
you can do this upto 13 because you know for sure that all numbers from 2 to 13 are factors of 13!

hence (b) will not be a prime for all given possibilities of K
_________________
GMATPrep 1 #1 - 710 (Q48, V38)

(n-1)(n+1) is the same as n(sqrd)-1(sqrd)

(1) this means that n is odd, take 7 for example, 7sqrd - 1 = 49 -1 = 48. when 48 is divided by 24 the remainder is 0. This goes on for all odd numbers except 3. 3sqrd -1 = 8, that leave a remainder of 8
(2) alone this is insufficient

If we combine both, you see that all odd numbers squared - 1 are divisible by 24, answer = C

I hope I make sense

yes the answer is C. I know the solution but i was looking at an easier way to find a solution. If anyone can tell an alternative method that would help. Thanks.
Here's the solution:
There are 4 possibilities when the sum can be odD:
1) all 3 are odd
2) 2 are even and 1 is odd - with 3 different possibilites of placements:

Probability of selecting odd, odd, odd:
(1/2)(1/2)(1/2) = (1/ -- (1/2) because there are 50 odd numbers in 100 numbers so 50/100 = 1/2

Probability of selecting odd, odd, even:
(1/2)(1/2)(1/2) = (1/

Probability of selecting odd, even, odd:
(1/2)(1/2)(1/2) = (1/

Probability of selecting even, odd, odd:
(1/2)(1/2)(1/2) = (1/

Adding all the probabilities = 4(1/ = 1/2 probability that hte sum of 3 numbers is odd.

Pls. post if anyone is aware of an alternate and easier way to solve this.

Thanks
Subject: OG11 Question 153
Posted: Fri May 09, 2008 2:31 pm (GMT -7)

Can someone please explain this better then the OG?

153. Does the integer k have a factor p such that 1>p>k?
(1) k>4!
(2) 13! + 2 <= k <= 13! + 13

I understand that (1) is not sufficient.
With (2), how can you be sure that k is not a prime number between 13!+2 and 13! + 13?

Thanks!

Can someone help explain how to solve this problem? The Answer is E.

Machines X and Y work at their respective constant rates. How many more hours does it take machine Y, working alone, to fill a production order of a certain size than it takes machine X, working alone?

(1) Machines X and Y, working together, fill a production order of this size in two-thirds the time that machine X, working alone, does.

(2) Machine Y, working alone, fills a production order of this size in twice the time that machine X, working alone, does.
GMAT Strategy :: RE: after 1 month..

Subject: Re: after 1 month..
Posted: Fri May 09, 2008 2:23 pm (GMT -7)

First, as Riggaz asked: are you doing these questions under timed conditions? If not, those accuracy levels are not really reflective of how you would perform.

thisisvb wrote:

1. I never took a diagnostic at the beginning of my prep since I didn't even know what DS, CR, etc. is. Should I be taking a paper-based diagnostic now or one of the sample CATs?

Do one of the GMATPrep cats. That is the best predictor and will give you a really good idea of where you are currently at.

thisisvb wrote:

2. After performing horribly in each section, should I review my notes + go back to the OG OR move on and start with the verbal & math review guides or kaplan r sumn?

Go through the resources section found at the top of the page, read my blog to see how I focused on learning lessons from the questions and you can read through some of resilient's posts, which I have been posting to.

http://www.beatthegmat.com/adventures-of-650-score-to-a-700-score-t9416.html

If you have not reviewed your mistakes, it would be foolish, inefficient and frustrating/demoralizing to continue with new material without first learning what you are doing wrong. You will see very little improvement even as you do more problems and that does bad things to your confidence.

thisisvb wrote:

3. Since I am targeting a score of 720+, when do I book my test date? How do I know when the right time is? (personally, I don't think I'm anywhere near my target score)

2 - 3 months is the normal amount of time people study - going over may lead to burnout.

thisisvb wrote:

4. For SC, I read the mgmat guide and then did the OG questions. After reading each topic, I tried implementing what I had just read while doing the probs, but mostly found myself going with my 'gut feeling'/intuition. Are we supposed to remember ALL the sc rules outlined in mgmat guide? How do I get better?

You will not be able to score your best going on intuition. You need to structure your studies so that you learn the question types, what you should focus on, what the errors are, and how to fix them. I built a big table in a notebook and did problems untimed, but I systematically categorized everything. After about 50 problems, I was able to immediately understand the question types and errors, etc. Only after I learned the types and understood what to look for did I begin timed practice. Intuition can only take you so far and its limits are bound by the simple english we normally use to communicate in our daily lives.
_________________
http://www.beatthegmat.com/my-blog-errors-and-lessons-learned-t4899.html
550 =\ ...560 =\... 650 =) ...570 =( ...540 =*( ...680 =P ... 670 =T ...=T... 650 =T ...700 =) ..690 =) ...710 =D ...GMAT 720 DING!! ;D

dferm wrote:

Please Help..

Thanks.

So, the only way that a line will NOT venture into quadrant II is if:

1. The line has a positive slope. Any line with a negative slope will, at some point, go into quad II.

and...

2. The line has a negative y-intercept. If it's positive, it will go into quad II regardless of the slope.

So, applying that to what's given.

1) k has a negative slope. Great, we know it will hit quad II. Sufficient.
2) So, y-int is negative, but we don't know anything about the slope. Negative, it goes into quad II. Positive, it doesn't. Insufficient.

Answer is A. Hope that's helpful.
What I have found is that it depends on the school. A student of mine who was planning to attend Thunderbird told me that they wanted to see a high score. However, I don't think my school (Babson) put much weight on it at all, as several members of my cohort scored pretty badly in this section.

In short- get in touch with the schools that interest you.
Best wishes,

your performance will change depending on the question bank, who wrote the questions, how you are performing that day, how focused you are, what format the questions come in (e.g. a set of 15 questions or a set of 40 or a set of 20 on paper). you spend an awfully large amount of time focusing on every single drop, uptick, and/or adjustment of your scores resilient. in fact, i will repeat what i've mentioned to you before: don't lose sight of the forest by focusing on the tree. there are simply too many factors for anyone on this board to give you a reason for why you saw the score drop - only you can figure that out.
_________________
http://www.beatthegmat.com/my-blog-errors-and-lessons-learned-t4899.html

I agree with the explanation for the first Q, but I do not agree with the second one.

Verbs of certainity go before the main verb, after the verb to be, and betwen any type of auxiliary verbs:

I (surely, certainly, probably) know.
I am probably confused. You are surely there, arn't you?
I will probably call.
I will probably have three correct answers.
_________________
Good luck to you all (now working on the gmat) and thank you all (who took it).
Columbia has an accelerated program that starts in Jan.

Kellogg also has a one year program, although I am not sure it starts (might be in the summer).

I am sure there are other schools with Jan start or 1 year programs.

Good luck!

Subject: Waitlist complication with low GMAT
Posted: Fri May 09, 2008 1:24 pm (GMT -7)

Hi, I'm a new member to the forum with a pressing challenge. I was waitlisted at G-town (my top-choice) during round 2. My intention was
to get off the WL as soon as possible by addressing my main weakness-- a 600 GMAT (Q 30, V 42) with a low quant score. After taking a prep course with Veritas, I took the exam for the fourth time and receive a lower overall score, albeit a higher quant score. I've gone through past posts on this forum and have found conflicting advice: taking the GMAT again (even with an unmoved score) shows Adcom your interest; Adcoms take only your highest score and disregard anything lower. So, my question:

-- Should I submit my new scores, even though they are lower than my
previous scores? My latest break down is a 580 (Q 34, V 35!). The quant is the highest score of all 4 attempts, yet the verbal is astonishingly low. That being said, is there value in this new score?

I do have Stats in my transcript and scored As, so it's not a matter of quant incompetence-- except for on the actual GMAT! Any insight you could provide would be helpful
