Topic: Request for information on university
PostWed Mar 10, 2010 8:41 am

Hello,

I am a BSc Computer Science graduate from India with 4 years of IT work experience. While my graduation in Computer science has helped me immensely in my career so far, I want to be able to prepare myself for an early career change to Marketing and Sales. That is the reason for pursuing an MBA. I look to specialize in Marketing and sales but at the moment am looking for General management programs with options to specialize too.

I have applied to universities in UK and have received unconditional admits from University of Leicester, University of Southampton and Newcastle University.

I have checked through various league table rankings like Sunday Times Guide, The Economist and various other too however I am unable to make a decision and it would really help if you can share your thoughts on these universities.
I have considered the course content and the post MBA opportunities like (average % salary increase), student diversity and even points like city safety. However all the programs are very much alike. and that is why I am facing a dilemma on
which program to choose.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Awaiting your reply.

Many thanks,
Priyanka

Dear Priyanka,

I'm afraid I won't be much help to you on this one. I think these schools probably are all on par with each other on most of the statistics and other data points. I think you are going to have to determine which schools seems to be the best fit for you from a culture standpoint, meaning where you will feel most comfortable. Perhaps one has distinguished itself more in the process in this regard? or been more forthcoming with information? or you could chat with current students to get a better idea of what it is like at each program? You might also want to go back through the data more closely to see if one has a better track record of placement in marketing in your desired industry or a better marketing curriculum/faculty.

Congratulations on your admissions!
Lisa

Many thanks Lisa for your prompt reply.

I will reconsider the programs and their courses. Have also tried to get in touch with current and ex-students. Hope it gives me a better perspective.
I have also applied to Nottingham University Business School and have an interview shortly. Hope I can convert it.

Thanks again...

Hello Lisa,

Hope you are doing well.

I have received an offer from the University of Nottingham for MBA full time and this only adds to more new developments and confusion. I know this university appears in the FT league table and I do have offers from Newcastle University, Leicester University and University of Southampton.

Again I have not only considered rankings but also things like course content and post MBA scenarios in UK.

All the programs are very much alike. and that is why I am facing a dilemma on which program to choose.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Regards,
Priyanka

Congratulations, Priyanka! It is nice to have options, but it can make the decision harder. Unfortunately, I just don't know these schools nor the UK market well enough to be much help. Hopefully you have been able to talk with some current students or alumni about their experiences or gathered some additional research that has helped you narrow down your list. Perhaps someone else on the forum is more familiar with the UK??

Best of luck on your MBA journey!
Lisa
