Recent estimates predict that between 1982 and 1995 the greatest increase in the number of people employed will be in the category of low-paying service occupations. This category, however, will not increase its share of total employment, whereas the category of high-paying service occupations will increase its share.

If the estimates above are accurate, which of the following conclusions can be drawn?
(A) In 1982 more people were working in low-paying service occupations than were working in high-paying service occupations.
(B) In 1995 more people will be working in high-paying service occupations than will be working in low-paying service occupations.
(C) Nonservice occupations will account for the same share of total employment in 1995 as in 1982.
(D) Many of the people who were working in low-paying service occupations in 1982 will be working in high-paying service occupations by 1995.
(E) The rate of growth for low-paying service occupations will be greater than the overall rate of employment growth between 1982 and 1995.

I go with B, as it clearly says that "high-paying service occupations will increase its share in the total employment", so definitely there are more employees in the high paying services than in the low paying services.

What is the OA?

Hi

Say there are 100 people nd the no of low wage workers is 80
the no of high wage workers is 20.

Now if at the end of the time period there are 150 people
then no of low wage workers is 120 (since the percentage contribution should remain the same )
the no of high wage workers is 30.
This will not work if the ratios r reversed i.e there are 80 high wage workers
and 20 low wage workers.

Hence A

Damn. All these questions seem so simple when you know the OA.

Here goes the explanation.

Lets say x was the no of low-paid and y was the no of high paid.

Lets say xi was the increase in the number of low-paid and yi was the the increase in the number of high-paid.

Lets say the total employees in 1982 - is A, and the increase in the number of total employees in 1995 is Ai.

What we know is:

xi>yi. (1)

(x+xi)/(A+Ai)=x/A (2)

and (y+yi)/(A+Ai)>y/A

solving (2) => x*A+x*Ai=x*A+xi*A =>xi/x=Ai/A. (4)

Solving (3)=> y*A+yi*A>y*A+y*Ai => yi/y>Ai/A (5)

Take (4) and (5) yi/y>xi/x (6)

With (1) and (6), It is clear that x>y.

First of all we are assuming in that there are only two type of service workers?
Secondly it says that high wage workers share will be greater in 1995.
30/150 is not greater than 20/100?

I think Ash is right.

Even we cannot resolve this issue by taking two services in hand.

How the %age share of one increases by keeping the other one constant. Crying or Very sad

In our case, 80% constant. how the other part will increase?

i think we are missing some point.
