The choice is between B and E. The others can be discarded right away.
E over B because 'women' is used as a central theme in the entire passage and the 'distinct literary expression' is discussed only the second section of the passage. No mention is made initially.
2. D
Refer to line "Yet, since poetry of the period came to be defined solely as short lyrical poetry, known as waka, and became the prevailing means of expressing love, women continued to excel in and play a central role in the development of classical Japanese poetry"
This line mentions the lyrical nature of the poems. Hence D

This is from an old McGraw-Hill book for the IIM-CAT, I believe, so there's probably an official explanation offered by the company if anyone has the full book. BUT this isn't a GMAT question, so I'm not sure if merits this much discussion.
