Topic: Question Regarding Community Service
PostFri Oct 16, 2009 12:25 pm

Hello

I have a very specific question related to community service. I quit my job 6 months back and since then have been volunteering work in a private hospital (Not a non-profit organization) in Mumbai, India. I decided to volunteer work in a private hospital because i wanted to help people and contribute to my community and at the same time gain some experience in administrative work. I have a 3 years of experience in Information Technology (IT) field and I am interested in perusing MBA in IT or IT related MBA's.

My question to you are:

1> will my volunteer work in private hospital considered community service by admission committee?

2> Can I put my volunteer work experience in my resume while applying to MBA programs?

2> As I took a break from work to do volunteer work will that be taken negatively by the admission committee?

I look forward to receiving your reply.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
Ami

Hello, Ami,

To answer your questions:

1. Yes, volunteer work in a hospital will be viewed as community service regardless of whether the hospital is nonprofit or private.
2. You can put it in the resume - but don’t put it under the “employment” section where the implication is that you are compensated for your work and have the corresponding accountability. You can, and should, put it in your resume, but make a separate section for community service and highlight this experience including relevant skills and responsibilities. Also, if you’re doing it basically full time, you should note that fact as well.
3. Applying to b-school as a fully employed person is always ideal. However, b-schools accept many people who are not conventionally employed at the time they apply. The key is to make a clear case for why you are doing your current volunteering, if possible linking it to your goals in terms of industry and/or skills or knowledge gained, etc. Taking a holistic view of your application and your overall message and positioning will help you describe this experience in a way that supports your candidacy.
