Solution:
Cost of x pounds is px dollars.
y pounds were discarded.
We are therefore left with (x - y) pounds.
Selling price of the above is s(x-y).
Profit is s(x-y) - px.
The correct answer is A.

yes using smart numbers also this can be done easily.
take x=2,p=1 and y=1,s=4
thus profit = sp-cp = 4-2 = 2
now checking for A we have profit = 2.
A it is.
take x=2,p=1 and y=1,s=4
thus profit = sp-cp = 4-2 = 2
now checking for A we have profit = 2.
A it is.

The cost to the grocery was xp dollars. Since y pounds were discarded, x - y was actually sold at a price of s dollars, and thus the revenue earned was s(x - y) dollars.
Thus, the gross profit was s(x - y) - xp dollars.
Answer: A
