For greatest possible area, triangle should be an isosceles rt angled
triangle. So, you will have 1 vertex at center and 2 on circle.

Area = 1/2 * b * h = 1/2

Area of triangle = 1/2 * a * b * sin (x), where

a and b are sides
x is the angle between sides a and b

Max value of sin (x) = 1 and this happens when x is 90 degrees.
So, an isosceles rt angled triangle is the one that has max area

I wish I could explain this without trigonometry...
