Hi,

I would like to know how competive my profile is.

GMAT: 710 (Q:48 V:40) AWA 4.0
TOEFL: 106 iBT (R:30 L:29: S:23 W:24)
Nationality: Colombia
Work experience: 5 years (fall 2010)
Undergrad: Civil Engineering - Universidad de Los Andes
GPA: 4.5 (Scale 1.0 - 5.0) Top 3% of the University

My first work experience was in Civil Engineering, but after 6 months I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in finance. Got a job as a Credit Analyst at one of Colombia´s major banks. I worked with entrepreneurs and small companies there. I led the creation of new credit department dedicated to these kinds of companies. I got an offer to be a coordinator in this department, but I decided to move on to a different field of finance in order to learn more. I got transfered to fixed income division of the bank and now I work at the propietary trading desk of the bank. I manage a derivatives and a corporate debt portfolios, even though I am just a junior trader.

Reason for MBA: Career advancement, fill "gaps" in my formation, to eventually start financial consulting firm in Colombia

Extracurricular:
- Active musician for more than 12 years
- Played in various local rock bands
- Toured through Colombia and played in major rock festivals both in Colombia and Ecuador in front of more than 30,000 people
-Owned a record and show production company

International experience:
Exchange student in Germany and internship in Ireland

Languages: German (fluent), English and Spanish (native)

Social:
Socialwork with children every saturday in Bogota's poorest neighborhood.

Target schools:
1. Columbia
2. NYU - Stern
3. LBS

Am I being realistic?

Thanks,
RMO

Hello,

Yes, I do consider you profile competitive for the schools you list. Keep in mind that you’re competing against the best in the world, so being qualified is just a first step. You will need stellar applications to rise above the many outstanding applicants. In preparing your applications, try to answer the question, “Why should the adcom pick me out of similarly qualified applicants in my industry and demographic groups?” Your mission in the application is giving them that reason.

Best regards,
