Profile Evaluation Post Tue May 29, 2012 10:36 am
Hey guys ,

I was just wondering if I could get your input on my profile .

Academics :

Xth Grade - 91% ( Overall )
XIIth Grade - 90% ( Overall )
Computer Engineering Degree at NIT Trichy.
Overall GPA of 8.4/10 - First Class with Distinction ( The highest possible class that can be achieved ) . I was in the top 5-10% of my class.

GMAT - 710 ( Q50,v35 ,AWA 5.5)

Work Experience -
1.5 years as Business Analyst at Credit Suisse. The project I worked on mainly dealth with Fixed Income Products and Forex Markets . The software was a monitoring tool that was used by the bank to track it's activities in these domains . My roles included speaking to the end user ( requirement gathering ) and acting as a middle man between the software developers on the team and the end user .

1.5 years as a Sales and Marketing Manager at my family business . The family business is a pharmaceutical company with a wide range of patents for a number of products . It is a well established business with clients all over the world . Right now I manage a team of about 30-40 people . I was instrumental in setting up markets in the US and Australia and the revenue for the company from these markets has increased exponentially since I joined the company .

My main aim is to do an MBA and then come back and take over the family business . I feel like doing a course that emphasizes leadership would really help me . Once I take over the business I would need to be in a position to lead a team of about 100-200 people .

My target Schools - HBS ( Leadership ) , Wharton ( Finance ) or Kellog ( For Marketing ) . Although I feel HBS would be the best fit because I would be taking a leadership role once I return to the family business after my MBA .

Extra Curricular Activities -

Captain of the College Football Team
Participated in an International Salsa Dance Congress
Was instrumental in Setting up a school for underpriveleged children in a village that was near the factory of the family business . This school provides free education for children from the age of 2 to 12 .

Overall things are looking good. Your grades are excellent as is your GMAT. We also see that people with family business goals tend to do rather well (the bigger the business, the better they do Smile) So when you present your goals to the AdCom make sure you emphasize the solidity and future potential of the business, as well as get SPECIFIC with your own plans on how you will grow the company as CEO/Owner.

Other than that I would recommend you add another 3-4 schools to your list.

Best,

Hello Jon ,

Thanks for your quick reply !

I just wanted to ask you one more thing - I also have a sister who just passed out of HBS last year and she is more than willing to vouch for me . Does this benefit my application in any way ?

Yes it does! Lucky you.
Smile

We call that a "legacy". If I remember correctly they ask you that on your application form, but when you apply you should also have your sister send a note to the Adcom.

Hello Jon,

If I have my College Senior over there in HBS..will that help me??
Like the above Sister-Brother Relationship??

What do you mean by "have my college senior"??? Do you mean you were at HBS for an exchange during your Senior year? Can you clarify?

I'm working on my HBS app now, and they wrote that they don't consider any additional materials outside of the scope of the app.

Is that just an official stance that's not necessarily true?

By the way...legacies. That should honestly have no bearing on admissions. It makes me so mad. Just another way for someone to gain an unfair advantage independent of merit.

Hii John,

I guess I was not clear in my previous post.
One of my college alumni is presently doing his MBA in HBS.
So,can he help me in my Application Form.
Will it work similar to brother-sister relationship?

Thanks,
Vamsi

Their official stance is their official stance. I can't claim that they are wrong, but you do have the option of ignoring it in certain cases. One example: Let's say your on a wait list, and the school asks you no to send any additional materials, but you get promoted to an awesome job. You should probably tell them about it anyways.

As for legacies, you may be right, but sometimes that's the way things work...

No, not really. At Harvard especially, the effectiveness of "knowing someone" who has done the MBA is less useful than t might be at other schools. Basically Harvard doesn't care as much because they know that everyone wants to go there.

Hi ,

Just an update to this thread :

I wrote the GMAT again today and scored a 670 . I'm really disappointed with this score . Will this lower score have an impact on my application ? Or will schools just look at my previous score of 710?

I'm really depressed about this score ! Sad

Post Mon Nov 19, 2012 3:05 am
Don't worry about it. Would have been great if you got MORE. But getting less won't affect your profile negatively in any way. (the schools will also very happily take your 710 Smile )

Thanks for telling me that Jon ! I feel much better now .

I don't think I can improve my on my 710 , so I think I'm just go in with this score.

On second hand, that seems a better idea Smile

Hi Jon ,

Just wanted to ask you something specific .

How can I alleviate concerns about my sub 80% percentile verbal score on the GMAT ? Is there some online course that I could do ? Can you recommend anything ?
