Profile Evaluation Post Sat Jan 28, 2012 4:33 pm
Hi Kofi,

I just wanted to get your thoughts about my chances for some the B-schools that i plan on applying this year in R1 and R2(Class of 2015). Below are some of the highlights of my profile:

1) Born in US with Pakistani Background. Spent 12 years in Pakistan (6-18). Did my high school from there and came back to US for college. So have experienced both Eastern and Western cultures and can bring in both perspectives to the class.

2) BS in electrical Engineering from a Public University. Magna Cum Laude. GPA 3.5

3) Almost 4 years of Work Experience right now. 5 years upon matriculation. Work for a fortune 100 company as a systems engineer. Started my career in a 3 year Leadership Development program (LDP) working across 3 different functions (Engineering, Business Development, Strategic Planning) for four rotations - with significant leadership opportunities/roles - while perusing my Masters degree in Systems engineering. Finished LDP last year and am now working as "Responsible Engineer" (Leading a team of 4) for two international projects in Asia. This has allowed me to travel to the two countries a few times for customer meetings as well as product installations.

4) MS in systems engineering from an Ivy League University while working full time. GPA 2.92 (Low GPA due to family illness and also due to working on multiple projects at work)
(My biggest concern is my Grad school GPA. I might be able to take another course over the summer to raise my GPA to 3.0+ but not sure how much it would help)

5) EC Activities: President of IEEE student chapter (Electrical engineering organization) in Undergrad. Organized job fairs, fundraisers, Industrial trips and various student conferences. Changed the face of the student body completely by making it financially stable and participating in various events across the country. The student body continues to be very active since i graduated.

6) Community service: have been actively involved in junior achievement from the past 3 years. Have been Teaching a 6 week course to 5th graders for 3 years.

7) GMAT : 740

8) post MBA goals : get into mgmt consulting (M/B/B). Long term goals(still in progress): Possibly Opening a consulting firm in Pakistan to address the various problems that the country is facing. (lack of education, poverty, etc. I grew up in Pakistan and have 1st hand knowledge of the problems of over there)

I plan on applying to the following schools:

R1: HBS, Stanford, Wharton, CBS (ED)

R2: Kellogg, Booth, NYU, LBS (still deciding whether to apply to LBS or not)

Based on the info, can you please provide your initial evaluation of my profile? What do you think are my chances at the schools I have listed?

Thanks for your help.

Wonderboyz,
I'm not Kofi, but almost as cool and certainly better looking. I'll run through your points to give you my perspective on each and give you my general overview....

1. International perspective is always positive
2. Solid
3. Systems engineer is a little ho hum, but I like your LDP and leadership experience combined with your international projects. I would expect strong recommendations; any promotion since LDP? I hope you have a few good stories about how you've taken on significant responsibilities or had to face challenging decisions in your various roles.
4. You correctly identified this as your main weak point. If you work with us, our consultant would dig deeper into your transcript to see if you may need to take a course. My initial reaction is probably not given your GMAT and GPA. You would clearly need to explain this in your optional essay -- damn Ivy League schools.
5. Seems stale/old
6. Like the community service. JA is a throwaway, but teaching a course is a significant commitment and you've shown it over 3 years. Good work.
7. Good
8. We'll help you clean this up--maybe think about ways to make money while addressing some of these infrastructure issues

Top schools. You have a good chance here, but it's competitive. Your GPA is the big weakness, so if you don't have any weaknesses elsewhere and a well crafted application, you're well positioned for one of those schools. Let me know if you have any questions or want to work with us-eallen@admitadvantage.com

I hope that helps.

Hi Eric,

Thank you so much for the prompt reply. I will let the females decide on who is better looking Smile.

Just wanted to clarify a couple of things.

For number 3, i know systems engineer is a little ho hum, but i did that deliberately due to the nature of my work. I was promoted during the last year of my eldp, and was given a lead role upon graduation from the program. I do have some good stories about the challenges and responsibilities of the various roles that i took in the LDP. Have strong Recs from senior folks including a VP and a Wharton Alum.

I agree that number 5 seems old and stale, but at the same time the impact that me and my team had on the organization when were running it was significant. DO you think its worth mentioning in any of the essays if i can articulate the story in the right way? or is it too old/stale as you said ?

I do plan on scheduling a consultation with you guys around March/April time frame to discuss things in more details and possibly work with AA.

Thanks
