Hi goISB Team,

I plan to re-apply at ISB in R1. May I request you to please evaluate my profile and suggest next steps?

Class 10th - 73%
Class 12th - 84%
B.Tech CGPA - 8.76 (Electronics Engg, NIT)
GMAT - 710 (Q50, V36, AWA - 5, IR - 6) - 4 attempts

ISB Application Status 2017 - Rejected (Received interview call)

Work Ex - Analytics - 4 Years 8 months till Mar'17 (Curr Employer - 100 people analytics and research firm for ~3 Years now, Prev Employer - Mu Sigma - ~2 Years)

Clients - Pharmaceutical Companies (Healthcare)

Current Designation - Manager (Leading a 3 member team)

Work Achievements - 2 promotions in current firm, 2 awards in current firm and 2 awards in previous firm

Extra Curricular:-
Co-founded a group to address sanitation crisis during college days - Couldn't continue the work post college
Pro Bono consulting projects for NGO (In education sector)
Teaching Volunteer NGO during 2015 - 16 academic year

Short Term Goal - Join marketing and strategy team of a healthcare e-commerce firm

My Questions:-
Should I consider re-taking GMAT with already a score of 710?
How can I create a delta to show significant improvements in my profile w.r.t. previous application?
Any other points to improve my profile?

Looking forward to your feedback,
Manoj

Hi Manoj,

A score of 710 is quite competitive for your profile. While you may attempt retaking GMAT to aim for a higher score, we don't think it would make that much of a difference.

At this point of time, we think that you need to identify the gaps in your application that led to a reject. Here's what we recommend:

1. Write to the ISB admissions team. If you were given a chance to interview, they often provide feedback on request.
2. Discuss goals and your interview experiences with an expert. For instance, e-commerce in the healthcare is an extremely niche area and might raise some flags in terms of goals
3. Start early on your application and build towards improvements in your profile that will make a better application.

We'll need more information on what those improvements might be, but do go through this post. It might help.

Feel free to reach out in case of more queries.
Cheers,

Hi Sumit,

You definitely have a good business profile and I am sure we will find a lot of leadership stories in your application. A score of 700-720 would make a competitive score as well. Merely playing sports alone does not sometimes count as a strong extracurricular, therefore you may have challenges showcasing your profile as a well-rounded candidate.

Having said that, it all depends on your ability to showcase the impact you have been able to drive at work and beyond. We recommend you that give your GMAT as soon as possible and begin working on the essays. You have a good profile and with the right essays, you can definitely make it to ISB.

In terms of other schools, why don't you try our Free B school shortlisting tool and we can help you out.

ISB Applications are now open!

Departing from tradition, this year ISB has announced only two essays, which means that it becomes even more important for applicants to identify their strengths and map them with accomplishments and goals succinctly.

Please see details of both essays here: https://www.apphelp.co.in/ISB-Essays.htm

Feel free to reach out in case of queries.

Hi,

Could You please evaluate my profile?

Xth standard CBSE board : 88%
XIIth standard Rajasthan board : 77.69%
Btech from IIT Roorkee : 7.81 GPA (Electrical Engg.)
Total Work Exp : 5 years as of now. (3 yrs of work ex in Samsung and 2 years as of now in Qualcomm)
Gave GMAT twice: 700 (Q50,V33) in Sept 2016 and 710 (Q51,V33) in June 2017.

I applied to the R1 in ISB2016, but didnot interview call. While asking them for feedback, they suggested to work on
my career goals and strengths.

Also, I would like to know should I appear for GMAT exam once again?
If possible, please let me know about my changes for IIM A/B/C Executive programs as well.

Thanks,

Hi siddp,

Academically you have a good profile and a good brands on your CV too. Your GMAT score of 710 is well above average and should also not be a reason for rejection by itself. This makes us agree with the ISB ad-com, that the weaker part of your application does seem to be the essays, in other words, your strengths and goals. We have seen that essays often become a stumbling block for applicants from a technical background.
We think your GMAT score is fine both for ISB and the IIMs. We'd like to have a closer look at your essays to help you identify weaknesses and areas of improvements. Since ISB does not have a re-applicant essay, it will also be important to incorporate improvements in your profile in the existing essays 1 and 2.

Feel free to reach out to us on call us on +91 9871354580 or email us a copy of essays at [email protected].

Hi Sid,
I don't think GMAT score would've been the issue. But if you can improve your score it wouldn't hurt. Focus on other aspects of your application and improve on them. Did you take any professional help when you applied last year ?
Your chance at IIMs is also good. I think you need to work on your application. Write it in a clear, concise and spectacular manner. Good Luck.

Best,

Hi Sumit

Excellent overall profile. A good mix of technical and commercial experience. If you can achieve your target GMAT (even on the lower side - 700), you should be well set with a decent application.

Hi Siddp

While this feedback from ISB seems a bit generic, can you provide a bit more information on what goals you went with? At 710, we dont think you need to retake the GMAT, with your profile (even for the IIMs). The weakness lies elsewhere.

I agree you have some strong leadership from work and that your profile looks good for ISB. I'm a fan of INSEAD and suggest you look at that program also.

Please evaluate my chances of acceptance

by Satvikbajaj » Thu Nov 02, 2017 9:18 am
Hi!
Please evaluate my chances of acceptance:
10th : 9.4CGPA (CBSE)
12th: 94.5% CBSE (Best of 4 : 94.75%)
B.Com Hons : CGPA 7 till second year, expected : 7.5CGPA after third year. (I'm currently in the 5th sem)
GMAT: 710
Studying at DCAC, Delhi University.
Work experience: 6 months : Working at Quality Council of India, autonomous GOVERNMENT company as a Junior Analyst. (Took permission from the Principal to skip classes and just come to college to take exams and for internals)
Please note that this is not an internship but a contractual employment.
Awarded gold medal at school for consistent academic excellence for 7 years.
No internships and impressive extra curriculars other than National rank 2 at brainvita
(puzzle game).

I guess the most impressive aspect of my profile is being the only and youngest Junior Analyst at QCI and my roles and responsibilities at that post.

Hi Rupertron

Your post mentions mostly about work ex and academics. GRE of 325 is slightly on the lower side.
If you can score 720+ in GMAT you have a good chance, but you will have to take care of 2 things primarily-
1. Justify your reasons to do an MBA and why now. The quality of your work experience needs to come out. I emphasize on this because the number of years is on the lower end and the industry in not very diverse.
2. All of these are bullet points, how well are you going to tell your story in the application essays.

Hope that helps.
