profile evaluation for MIM

Post Fri Aug 08, 2014 3:28 am
Hello Sir,
I am doing mechanical engineering from one of the reputated institutes in India and planning to apply for MIM. I would really appreciate your help to tell me my chances in getting into top b schools. My profile:

Age: 22
GMAT:650 ( q 50 v 28)
CGPA: 8/10

Internship: 1 month internship in project management from indonesia in one of the leading company globally.
Planning to do few more internship in management.

Extra curricular: Board member in one of the club/chapter in my college.
Have few certificates of conducting various workshops, events etc.
Have done few projects.

I wish to apply to following colleges:
1. HEC Paris
2. Essec business school
3.IE business school

I am also planning to apply to ESADE business school, Emlyon business school and Rotterdam school of management to be on safe side.

Please tell me what chances do i have to get into the first three and the last three colleges i have mentioned. I am also planning to write a research paper in management. Would that help significantly? What else can I do to improve my admission chances.
I would also like to know that would it be wise to apply to colleges like HEC Montreal and University of Sydney Business School ( Low in ranking but one of the top colleges in their country). Please suggest me some other colleges according to my profile.
Also suggest me whether a good IELTS score would help me to make up for my low verbal score. Should I consider giving GMAT again considering the time left for application deadlines which is generally in Oct, Nov?
Thank you.

Most European schools will take a serious look at you with a 650 GMAT, so I would say given the time constraints, focus on your applications. The European applications are a bit more involved than the US school applications, so you will need all the time you can spare. If you apply to all six, you should get into a couple with your profile. MIM programs do not have the same onerous work experience requirements as you likely know. Let us know if we can help you assemble a winning application.

Hey Aditya,
First up, you don’t have to freak out because you got a GMAT score of 650. Granted the averages of the schools you’re targeting (HEC, ESSEC and IE) generally ranges between 680 and 700, but they also accept applicants in the 600 range as long as you’ve got a strong application. First up, your quant score of 50 is pretty good and this shows that you’re analytically strong. Your CGPA isn’t the best, but you still stand a decent chance if you focus on the other parts of your application such as essays, LOR etc.

If you’re planning on retaking the GMAT exam, then think it through. Will you be able to get a significant improvement in the time period that you have?
Also, if you’re short on time, don’t you think it would be better to use the time to complete other parts of your application? The other parts are pretty comprehensive and time-consuming. Hence, it might be better to spend more time on your application than all of it on your GMAT and very little time on your application. Just a great GMAT score will not get you in.

With regards to your English test scores, colleges normally have a cut-off of about 100 TOEFL equivalent or a little higher. If your native language is English or your undergrad was taught in English, then this requirement is waived off for you. So, don’t worry about it too much.
You can check out a review of your top 3 schools and the admission process in the following links, along with other schools you're targeting:
HEC Paris - http://www.mim-essay.com/hec-paris-mim-review.html
ESSEC - http://www.mim-essay.com/essec-mim-review.html
IE Business School - http://www.mim-essay.com/ie-mim-review.html

As far as writing a research paper in management goes, I think it only makes a significant difference if you can get it published in a peer-reviewed journal.

With your scores and profile, I believe you stand a good chance at your safe options. And if you plan on applying for Emylon, then you can submit your application via SAI which is a common application for HEC, ESCP, Emylon and two more schools for a relatively much lesser application fee. This does not affect your chances as the application is merely forwarded to all the 5 schools for them to review your profile.

Hope this information has been helpful. Cheers.
