Profile Eval - Female, Non-traditional

by cmajedi » Sun Jul 01, 2012 9:04 am
Hi,
Can you please evaluate my candidacy for top 20 schools? I am worried that I'm not rockstar material enough for NYU which is my absolutely first choice.

Here is a quick summary:
Female, African-American, age 31
Undergrad: Electrical/Computer Engineering 3.3
Grad: Masters in Advertising 3.7
Jobs:
2 years as engineer at 2 different companies. Promoted from Engineer 1 to Engineer 2.
3 years in Advertising Strategy at top firm in NYC. No promotions. Left to start my own company Mama Manicures, Inc. Learned a lot but "failed". Working on another company but will likely just patent part of it rather than run the whole business. I've learned that I need a team of people to work with, I can't do it all on my own, which is one of many reasons I want to get an MBA to meet other like-minded people.

EC:
Undergrad:
Vice President of NSBE chapter
Co-founded Sigma Psi Sigma, a professional fraternity
Created and produced a television show called Hot Spots, shown weekly on Public cable station
NASA Scholar
Lockheed Martin Track and Field champion 2 years
Interned for Department of Energy for 4 years

Grad:
Co-founded Black Advertising Council
Created and produced a make-over television show
Member Advertising Graduate Council
Interned for top agencies for 2 years
Graduate Assistant for 2 years

At work:
Appointed Member of Diversity Council, put together various events for the agency

Outside of work: A Character Educator for young children with my church. I also read to under-privileged children in a local elementary school.

Let's assume my GMAT is 700-720. Do I have a chance to get into NYU or UCLA or USC full-time? I'm interested in pursuing marketing/product development/innovation. Short term I'd like to work in a marketing or innovation role. Long term I want to run another business with a great team of smart people that I hope to meet in graduate school.

Does my short term goal seem realistic considering my background? What do you think my "faults" will be in the application? Any suggestions on how to increase my chances?

Thanks for your time!
Candace

Dear Candace,
I like your profile. Even if you are on the older side, you have an interesting background. Being an African American female will help out. And advertising is also an interesting industry. The Adcoms don't really get all that many Ad folks (even though there are already what? Six seasons of Mad Men? :)). That plus an entrepreneurial attempt (even a failed one) shows a little bit of zest. Your grades are good to very good.

But whats most impressive, for me, is all this diversity work. Like Co-founding the Black Advertising Council, being on the Diversity Council, etc.

I think NYU is possible for you! Don't sell yourself short! Just nail that GMAT on the head, and all you gotta to do is reach out and grab (well, what I mean is: Write an amazing application! :))

Also, given your background and diversity work, you are a pretty perfect fit for the Consortium. IF you aren't aware, check it out:
