Hi there,

I got a 700 on the GMAT. I scored in the 92 percentile on the verbal section and in the 74 percentile for math. Unfortunately, I knew that I screwed up one of my essays -- and ended up with a composite score of 4.5. For the record, I have gotten both of my post-grad jobs largely because of my superior writing skills.

My gpa is 3.6 from a top ten liberal arts college. Do I need to retake? I want to go to a top 15 b-school.

Thanks!

Hello,

Regarding the low writing score, this is something the adcom may not focus much on if a candidate has a good verbal score and a strong transcript overall. I wouldn’t worry about the writing score, to be honest. Compared to other components of the GMAT adcoms don’t place much weight on it, unless there’s other evidence that already causees concern about verbal skills.

The quant score is also a little low. If your undergrad transcript shows good grades in basic quant courses like statistics and calculus, that’s a big plus to mitigate potential concern about your ability to handle the quantitative aspects of the program. If you use quantitative analysis in your work, it’s another plus. Those two points, particularly the former, can mitigate the somewhat low quant score.

Best regards,
