primary source of income

by gmatnmein2010 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 3:25 am
Companies are often torn between the benefits of focusing on one major product or service and the drawbacks of relying too heavily on one primary source of income. While narrow focus can provide a company with an advantage over competitors that offer a wider range of products or services, an undiversified income stream can leave a company susceptible to major fluctuations in cash flow. We can see this tension realized when, for example, ________________.

Which of the following best completes the passage below?

1)a local messenger service known for its speedy deliveries is forced to lay off twenty percent of its work force after a rise in local taxes encourages many local businesses to move out of state

2)an advertising agency loses one of its clients

3)a holding company that owns a car rental agency and a national doughnut chain is now interested in purchasing a professional basketball team

4)a construction company opts to use non-union labor to increase its profits

5)a specialty sandwich store decides to open franchises throughout the country that will focus on using local ingredients

we need to fill the blank with some example that shows how a company suffered coz of undiversified income stream.
Lets look at options to find the one that fits the bill.

1)a local messenger service known for its speedy deliveries is forced to lay off twenty percent of its work force after a rise in local taxes encourages many local businesses to move out of state [this shows a case when a company suffered coz of relying on only one source of income. Correct. My answer]

2)an advertising agency loses one of its clients [losing one client is not a problem, but we do not have info if this company is diversified or not. or rather how many clients it possess. Eliminated!]

3)a holding company that owns a car rental agency and a national doughnut chain is now interested in purchasing a professional basketball team [this is total opposite to the stimulus. this is a diversified company we are talking abt here. Eliminated!]

4)a construction company opts to use non-union labor to increase its profits [again does not meet the stimulus criteria. diversification is not specified.and loss is not stated. infact it is increasing profits. Eliminated!]

5)a specialty sandwich store decides to open franchises throughout the country that will focus on using local ingredients [ this is a an expansion. totally woww and nothing got to do with stimulus criteria. Eliminated!]

IMO A

A says 1)a local messenger service known for its speedy deliveries is forced to lay off twenty percent of its work force after a rise in local taxes encourages many local businesses to move out of state

[this shows a case when a company suffered coz of relying on only one source of income. Correct. My answer]

The question stem talks about slack in "cash flow"...but A talks about attrition rate. SO u can ask me how does A relates with the passage??

Simple...If the company downsize the employee count then the whole business of speedy delivery may be affected.

Assuming there is no increase in productivity, decrease in ManCount shall /always reduce the efficiency of the Output.

So A rightly fits the passage..

Others Options...Fibo was very much correct!!

Sometimes we may not get the answer choice at the first go( I mean it may not be direct/open) As in this case we need to "construe " one step beyond to see the implication of attrition rate & its impact on the business & slack in cash fllow.

Which of the following best completes the passage below?

1)a local messenger service known for its speedy deliveries is forced to lay off twenty percent of its work force after a rise in local taxes encourages many local businesses to move out of state
correctly identifies a company with a clear, narrow focus

2)an advertising agency loses one of its clients
does not specify any particular focus of the advertising agency nor does it demonstrate any major cash flow consequences due to the loss of the client

3)a holding company that owns a car rental agency and a national doughnut chain is now interested in purchasing a professional basketball team
shift of scope type

4)a construction company opts to use non-union labor to increase its profits
irrelevant to argument

5)a specialty sandwich store decides to open franchises throughout the country that will focus on using local ingredients
Though the specialty sandwich store that uses local ingredients might be called a very focused company, there is no evidence presented that this focus has had any adverse effect on cash flow.
IMO A

Which of the following best completes the passage below?

Find an answer choice that meets all of the following criteria :

1. something that focuses on one major product/service
2. that one major product is a primary source of income
3. the company suffers because primary source of income is cut off

1)a local messenger service known for its speedy deliveries is forced to lay off twenty percent of its work force after a rise in local taxes encourages many local businesses to move out of state
Correct : This answer choice meets all the above mentioned criteria. 1. the company focuses on speedy service 2. the company has to lay off staff which implies that speedy service is its primary source of income 3. the company's income stream is not diversified but concentrated only on local business which have now moved out of state leaving this local messenger company with major fluctuation in cash flow.

2)an advertising agency loses one of its clients
Incorrect : This does not meet even one criteria mentioned above.

3)a holding company that owns a car rental agency and a national doughnut chain is now interested in purchasing a professional basketball team
Incorrect : It shows that the company is not focused on one major product. It is in fact a diversified company interested in diversifying more [Good for LA Lakers Fans :)]

4)a construction company opts to use non-union labor to increase its profits
Incorrect : There is no talk about focused product or primary source of income. Eliminated

5)a specialty sandwich store decides to open franchises throughout the country that will focus on using local ingredients
Incorrect : Focusing on local ingredients DOES NOT mean focused product.

"We can see this tension realized when .." - Couldn't this mean that a corporate/company realized that it could be harmful to focus on one thing and diversified its products/services. Going by this thought, I was looking for an example where a firm realized it (the argument) and diversified and hence I chose option C
Also, option A says "encourages many local businesses to move out of state". So, who knows even if they were into different products/services rather than focusing on just one, the rise in local businesses could have made all of them move out of state or something.
Could you please help me understand the OA better? Thanks in advance.

The argument given is this -
Strategy - Narrow Focus
Advantage - Competitive advantage
Disadvantage - Undiversified income stream

The correct answer should talk about both an advantage and a disadvantage.

A - correct answer.
Strategy - Laying off 20% of its workforce
Advantage - helps the company survive
Disadvantage - Speedy deliveries suffer.

B - Not an action/strategy. No mention/implication of advantage or disadvantage of using that strategy.

C - An action/strategy is mentioned.
No mention or implication of advantage/disadvantage of adopting that strategy.

D - A strategy is mentioned and an advantage of adopting that strategy is mentioned.
NO mention of disadvantage.

E - A strategy is mentioned. No mention/implication of advantage or disadvantage of using that strategy
