Primary purpose not clear

Post Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:18 am
Behavior science courses should be gaining prominence in businessschool curricula. Recent theoretical Line work convincingly shows why behav-
(5) ioral factors such as organizationalculture and employee relations areamong the few remaining sources ofsustainable competitive advantage inmodern organizations. Furthermore,
(10) empirical evidence demonstratesclear linkages between humanresource (HR) practices based inthe behavioral sciences and variousaspects of a firm's financial success.
(15) Additionally, some of the world's mostsuccessful organizations have madeunique HR practices a core elementof their overall business strategies.Yet the behavior sciences
(20) are struggling for credibility in manybusiness schools. Surveys showthat business students often regard behavioral studies as peripheral tothe mainstream business curriculum.
(25) This perception can be explained bythe fact that business students, hopingto increase their attractiveness toprospective employers, are highlysensitive to business norms and
(30) practices, and current businesspractices have generally beenmoving away from an emphasis onunderstanding human behavior andtoward more mechanistic organiza-
(35) tional models. Furthermore, thestatus of HR professionals withinorganizations tends to be lowerthan that of other executives.Students' perceptions would
(40) matter less if business schoolswere not increasingly dependent onexternal funding-form legislatures, businesses, and private foundations-for survival. Concerned with their
(45) institutions' ability to attract funding, administrators are increasingly targetinglow-enrollment courses anddegree programs for elimination.

The primary purpose of the passage is to

A. propose a particular change to business school curricula
B. characterize students' perceptions of business school curricula
C. predict the consequences of a particular change in business school curricula
D. challenge one explanation for the failure to adopt a particular change in businessschool curricula
E. identify factors that have affected the prestige of a particular field in business school curricula

OA E

I usually get the primary purpose incorrect. I had picked C.

Kindly let me know how to attack this.

Thanks
Amit
