Pre-MBA Coursework

by Charlie142536 » Mon Jan 18, 2016 3:34 pm
Hello,

I wanted to know if anyone had suggestions on coursework they completed as part of their application to bolster their profile, and to help prepare for the MBA program? In particular I wanted to know: What courses are most valuable to admissions committees for evaluative purposes - Calculus, Financial Accounting, Math for Managers? Do committees prefer online or in person classes?

My background: I scored a 710 on the gmat (Q:42 V:45) and want to support my lower quant score with coursework. I have a 3.73 GPA from NYU, majoring in Economics, however I graduated in 2008 so would like to show recent capabilities in quant as well as a balanced transcript. I already took Statistics in college (got an A), so assume it would not be helpful to take this again.

I'm leaning towards an in person Financial Accounting Intro course at NYU School of Professional Studies, or a Math for Managers online course through UC Berkeley Extension. Of course, I would prefer any less expensive options! Does anyone have any advice on deciding what class to take? Any suggestions for helpful, affordable classes?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there!

Courses in finance, accounting, and statistics are a great way to bolster your quant profile. They don't have to be at top tier institutions, however, if it's an option for you, definitely go for it!

Thanks for the feedback! Any recommendations on whether Financial Accounting or Calculus would be preferred, if I can only take one? Or would either be sufficient?

Financial Accounting would definitely be better than Calculus, it is a more relevant foundation for more MBA courses. The concepts learned would help evaluate financial statements, do management accounting, and even doing cost-benefit analysis for investments.

Hope this helps!
