‘The primary responsibility of citizens is to obey their nation’s civil and criminal laws.’
The sentence above states that the first responsibility of the citizens is to obey their nation’s civil and criminal laws. It‘s certainly true that in order to have a peaceful society everybody have to obey and respect laws. However, I don’t agree completely with the statement because I believe that there are some situations that laws are not fair and limits citizen’s freedom.
In countries with too strict laws such as some Islamic countries which follow the Islamic law, citizen’s freedom is very restricted. It is true that most of them agree with their laws and obey them, but there are some people that don’t agree with it and they can’t express their opinion because they will be jailed or executed. Therefore in this situation citizens have to obey laws in order to survive in their society rather than because it’s their responsibility.
Nevertheless, it is essential in modern societies to respect all civil and criminal laws in order to keep peace and order. Actually, laws were created to establish a system of punishments for inadequate behaviors in a society. Therefore, citizens have to respect those laws as far as those laws are fair and to maintain order and peace avoiding murdering, robbery and other uncivilized behaviors.
Therefore, it’s our responsibility to obey laws. But we can’t obey them blindly because in some countries laws don’t respect citizen’s essential rights such as freedom of expression and thinking. Thus in order to citizens to respect laws, laws have to respect citizens first.
Overall, I agree with the idea that everybody is responsible of obeying their own country’s civil and criminal laws in order to maintain peace and order in the society. However, those laws have to be respectful with citizen’s rights too.
