office employee

According to a recent magazine article, of those office employees who typically work 8 hours at the office each day but sometimes say that they will work at home on a particular day, 25 percent actually work less than one hour. At the same time, over 90 percent of those same office employees believe they are more productive working at home than working in their office.

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following conclusions about the office employees discussed in the article?

A)On average, the office employees working at home for a day work fewer hours than office employees working at the office

B)10 percent of the office employees are less productive working from home than working in their office.

C)At least 15 percent of the office employees do not define productivity exclusively in terms of the number of hours worked.

D)At least 25 percent of the office employees can complete the same amount of work in one hour at home as in 8 hours at the office.

E)Some of the office employees make statements regarding their productivity that are not in fact true.

My answer is C

Additionaly, according to studies, people who work in offices are more productive and happier than those who work at home, who are easily prone to depression and lack of sociability.

I already discard options (A) and (E), but how can I discard options (B) and (D)?

This type of problem can be confusing to many students because the question contains the phrase "best support" and many students falsely conclude that it is a strengthen/support question. However, careful reading of the question shows that the statements above will support one of the following options. Accordingly, we are dealing with an inference question. One of the following choices must be true based on the text above.

Answer choice (B): 10 percent of the office employees are less productive working from home than working in their office.

Does the text say that? Do we know that? Actually, the text doesn't talk about productivity much at all. It merely refers to the number of hours worked.

Answer choice (D): At least 25 percent of the office employees can complete the same amount of work in one hour at home as in 8 hours at the office.

Does the text say that? Do we know that? No, the text does not talk about the amount of work that an employee can complete in one hour.

Answer choice (C), the credited response, reads: At least 15 percent of the office employees do not define productivity exclusively in terms of the number of hours worked.

Does the text say that? I think it does. The text indicates that 90% of 25% of the people who work less than an hour at home still consider themselves more productive at home than at work. Clearly, 22.5% of these people do not define productivity exclusively in terms of the number of hours worked.
