Hi AbeNeedsAnswers,

We're asked if X is greater than Y. This is a YES/NO question. We can solve it by TESTing VALUES.

1) X = Y +2

With this Fact, we can see that X is "2 greater" than Y, so the answer to the question is ALWAYS YES. You can see this pattern with a few TESTs:
IF....
Y = 0, X = 2
Y = 5, X = 7
Y = -3, X = -1
Etc.
Fact 1 is SUFFICIENT

2) X/2 = Y - 1

IF....
Y = 1, X = 0 and the answer to the question is NO
Y = 3, X = 4 and the answer to the question is YES
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Final Answer: A

Statement One Alone:

x = y + 2

Since x is always 2 more than y, we see that x will always be greater than y. Statement one alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Statement Two Alone:

x/2 = y - 1

x = 2y - 2

We see that x is not necessarily greater than y.

If y = 1, then x = 0 and x < y.

If y = 3, then x = 4 and x > y.

Statement two alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
