It will not be possible to implicate melting sea ice in the coastal flooding that many global warming models have projected: just like a glass of water that will not overflow due to melting ice cubes, so melting sea ice does not increase oceanic volume.

(A) like a glass of water that will not overflow due to melting ice cubes,
(B) like melting ice cubes that do not cause a glass of water to overflow,
(C) a glass of water will not overflow because of melting ice cubes,
(D) as melting ice cubes that do not cause a glass of water to overflow,

We should note right away that our sentence contains a comparison - when we notice a comparison on the GMAT, we should look for a couple things

1) we should ensure that the comparison is logical
2) we should ensure that the things we are comparing are grammatically parallel
3) we should ensure that we are using the correct words to compare them

Here, we are comparing the underlined portion to "melting sea ice does not increase oceanic volume". This tells us that the first thing in our comparison should take the form "verb-ing noun negative action". We should also notice that the non-underlined portion after the underlined portion begins with "so" - this means we need to find a comparison structure that includes the word "so". For example, "just as ... so [too] ..." is idiomatic, while "like ... so ..." is not.

Knowing this, we can eliminate answers for lack of parallelism and/or idiomatic structure, which should leave us with only answer choice E.
