What are my chances?

by Yolonator » Sun Sep 11, 2016 12:45 am
Hello, I am a 25 year old male that is not part of a underrepresented minority group.

I recently took the GMAT and scored a 720 on my first attempt. My undergrad GPA at a non-prestigious public university is 2.7 where I double majored in political science and economics. I am a current law school student also hovering around 2.7 gpa in my last year of law school (it's ranked but again, not prestigious). Without going into too much detail, the reason I want to get an MBA is because there is a emerging industry that I want to get into where there are almost no specific laws and regulations and my ultimate goal is to open a consulting firm.

I have about a year and a half of part time experience but no full time work experience. And nothing in a managerial position. However, I truly believe this industry is growing so fast that if I wait an extra year or two, that the opportunities may be gone by the time I graduate with an MBA.

What are my chances with tier 1 business schools?

Well sir,
Im afraid I don't have great news for you. With a 2.7 at a non target program, Tier 1 schools are likely out of range, even with an 800 GMAT.

Right now however, that wouldn't be what would hold you back from applying, but rather that if you intend to apply to full time programs you will need minimum 2-3 years work experience.

If you don't intend to work there may be other options, depending upon your goals and where you wished to attend Business School (like Europe has tons of MiM programs for folks with 0 work experience).

I hope this starts to lead you in the right direction, and if you have further questions, do not hesitate.

Best,
JF

I appreciate your candor. So given the current state of my application, is it impossible or highly improbable? I ask because I would like to apply to a full time program this year as a shot in the dark. Additionally, would my circumstances change if I applied to part-time programs?

Lastly, if I hypothetically apply after gaining 2-3 years of full time work experience, how do my chances differ from 2 years of experience as opposed to 3 years?

Thank you for your time.

Hey there,
Well PT programs are much easier to get into, but the question is: are they giving you what you want?

It's quite hard to get placed from a PT program in a good job as they don't have the resources for that and it's not what PT programs are for.

As for your other question, it's not just 2 years versus three years. It's dynamic as it depends on WHAT you do. The AVERAGE is however around 5 years experience. For example the vast majority of people who go to B-school with only 2/3 years are coming from consulting or IB - so they have been on an MBA track from day one. For IT people, I suggest getting more experience. Unless your promotion schedule is very quick.

So basically, it depends.
Best,
Jon
